  • Reusing Valves on a 3400?

Hey guys, so here's the deal... I've got a 3400 out of a 2002 Olds Alero, it's torn down to the short block right now, and I've order a NA Stage 2 Cam from the store, along with comp springs, retainers, and pushrods (my wallet is hurting). This little beasty is going into my 02 Cavalier 5spd

So all my valves looked pretty good when I took the heads apart (I'm sending them for a P&P) aside from the normal lip they form from coming in contact with the head all the time.

Anyways, I was planning on having them shot peened, and grinding them anyways (most of my shop labour is free, my best friend rebuilt airplane engines for many years) but is reusing valves on these motors a giant no no? Should I change them all? Or at least change the exhaust valves? Motor had about 140KM on it when I took it apart. Money is also starting to get tight, because I'm only a college student, lol.

    Thanks in advance guys!

I would recondition them as long as you have plenty of margin left. If you do replace any, get the 3500 valves instead of 3400. Same size but lighter and the intake valve has a different shape to it.

I've noticed it's usually the exhaust valves getting pitted, and just kiss them with our surface grinder with a dressed wheel...
