  • 3400 parts questions

i am going to start my 3400 build soon and i was wondering if there was any diffrence in the 96-99 parts and the 00-05 parts ? are the blocks better or somthing and are the heads the same ? i know that ther ewas talk of the intake mainfold being diffrent but does it make that much more power ?

    thanks guys

Blocks don't matter, heads you want as new as possible and thats about it. 170 or 487 with 10mm studs most likely unless you want the 8mm studs used on 487 and the newer casting that I don't have memorized yet (523?) Ill do a head article sometime.

if it has 99 on it, then its 2nd best and I don't know how it compares performance wise to the 00+. I just know 00+ flow more for the lowers than 99 and no date are no good.

Flow is dependent on that particular set of heads regardless of casting (speaking 3400 only). 3100 heads that are non roller suck for port consistancy or flow. 3100 roller aren't much better. Stick with 170 or 487. The other number is 8mm rocker only and 03+ or maybe 04-05+. 170 are all 10mm and 487 can be either 10mm or 8mm rockers.

Ben, what changed on the lowers? As far as flow wise.. larger at the bottom ports? My 97 3400 LIM at the top was almost perfect gasket match to the 3400 upper gasket. I had to take like 1/6" off just one side of each port. Would the early 3400 LIM fit up better to 3100 94 heads than the newer 3400 LIM's possibly?

EDIT: BTW the 3100 LIM sucked for casting quality. Each port was way different on the top. With a big rectangle notch cut out on some in a random spot.. None of them looked close to being equal. LOL Also it was rough cast inside. My 97 3400 LIM was smooth and flat inside the runners.

Its not the top or the bottom port. I leave a rougher texture to the runners now, because it flows better and is easier than sanding. Im going rougher on everything but its still a more uniform roughness.

That would be cheaper than using my core system and you can have him ship direct to me if you want. Otherwise, yes I can supply the parts using the core charge setup on the store.
