  • Looking at Camming my 2.8L, thoughts?

I am interested in buying a cam for my 1989 2.8L engine. It's sitting in a Beretta GTU. As of now on the engine I have a CAI, a UDP and a tuned chip. In the works I have a set of Roller Rockers.

This car is and will remain a daily driver. I would like to see performance gains, but not a huge toll on my idle. I am a total newb to this aspect of engines, so please bear with me.

    Thoughts? Advice?

I think you should save your money and upgrade to a full gen3 engine.. you'll have to pull the 2.8 out to change the cam anyways.. A stock 3400 with an intake, good exhaust and tuned chip will get you about 70 more HP then the 2.8.. Much more than a cam change will net.

    By the way, welcome

      Indeed.

I would look into a 260 crane cam and maybe even look into the 272 cam, but for a DD... It could be just a tad to wild. It has been done (DD with a 272 cam) although it's really up to you.
$ vrs Power yea a Gen 3 would be nice, but to keep things some what original and to prevent grenading your trans, I think you'll be good with the mods you have now and are inquiring about. If you do swap, I would go full 3500, no wasting time and $! Don't forget about that lil 3t40.... It will not like seeing all that power so a 5 speed or built auto swap will be another thing to think about.

I had a 2.8 in my s10 blazer with the 260 cam/ with 390 holley and it ran strong. To see full potential the cam may need more fuel and definitly freeflow exhaust. The good thing about this cam is it can be had with 2 different lobe centers, 112 or 107 depending on where you want you power range and has a near stock idle. Crane has the 112 and the 107 is the g.m. cratecam which can be had as a whole kit.
