  • Estimate HP for these mods.

In my email thread with Sean (who wrote the 4x4wire.com article on 60º power tricks), he estimated his engine at 190-200hp. He rolls on 35" tires with 5.38 gearing. He was wondering if he was overestimating the HP? Opinions on the article? He talks about building up the 2.8L, but the engine he is actually working on there is a 3.4L.

    Summed up:
    3.4L F-body
Tubro City TBI (slightly larger than the 4.3L TBI?)
    Ported intake manifold
    TBI Spacer
    Amsoil Air filter (14"x4")
    CAI (snorkle)
    Headers
    2.5" exhaust
    Comp Cam (probably the 252H)
    1.6 roller rockers
    SuperChip
    Power Charger (another intake thing)
    Electric fan
    MSD 6 Off-road Ignition
    '98 Volvo V90 - Ford 5.0 swap in progress
'96 LR Range Rover 4.6 HSE - suspiciously reliable
'92 Volvo 740 Wagon - former parts car, now daily-driver beater
'71 Opel Kadett Wagon - 1.9L CIH w/ Weber DGV 32/36, in bits

Sounds slightly underestimated to me, I would say somewhere in the 200-210 area at the crank.

Hmm. Depending on how good the cam and headers are, 185-190. That's my best guess. The iron heads hold you back a lot. Ask merlot he had a pretty rad 3.4l but it still wasn't anything impressive.

damn merlot566jka thats a impresive build sheet there and probley expensive too ! but the power output is kinda low do you think that the gen 1 top end is what killed you on there ?
with that sheet i would have guess @ least 250 hp

He's measuring rw h.p.. not fly wheel.

I am thinking something else is up there too with such a small output number at the rear wheels.

But for sake of arguement I won't say anything else.

The 3.4 is pictured in the thread, but it sounds to me like it was another example of what he wants to do, thats all.

                A stock 2.8, with those small mods, might make 180/ 190 h.p.

If it was a 3.4 lower, I would say over 200 all day.

Was that build with the 2.8L or the 3.4L? (nevermind, already mentioned it was a 3.4L)

Barry, my friend had a 3.4l camaro with 5spd and headers and full exhaust, and a proper CAI. I was still stock when we raced and I had two friends in the car and I walked him with ease. I didn't smoke him but he was slowly moving behind me the whole time. 3.4auto stock is way slow. I've had close races with 3.8 auto's before when I was stock. Neck and neck with one of us wining barely. Now I have a good O2 sensor and big ports it would be a totally different story. 3.8 camaro's and GrandPrix GT's were a pretty even match for me back in the day. So 3.4auto is no contest!
