The lower gear is a slight press fit but not as tight as the GEN-I gears. I wanted it tight to minimize the chance of moving due to higher valve train loads as most people will want these for performance applications. The flame hardened 4140 will be very strong and have excellent wear properties.
The lower gear has the largest cross section of the two gears and is typically the one the is used for multiple keyways. Having said that, I am considering offering the timing chain sets in two forms. One with the multiple keyways and the other with a single straight up key. From what I have seen, the majority of people do not index a camshaft in and would prefer the lower cost product.
So far I haven't used anything for filling the engraving but have looked at some used in military applications.
I milled keyways in a couple of sets today to see how they fit. Looking pretty good. I was planning to have the keyways EDM'd but the cost is pretty high.
