now if i can just get the datalogging to work

i cant fgure it out! everythings connected, com ports are right but tunerpro cant detect the cable, tts's aldl tester fails the first 3 tests but the 4th says passed and its transfering just under 8192 baud, so that means its transfering, but the dtr, rts, and dts power fail...does that mean its the cable or the car or the computer?

Do you have your old latpop/cable to test? Have you checked all the configuration you can do to the USB driver /com emulator?

have the old laptop, but it crashed and wont let me wipe out windows and reinstall...its a big paper weight now.

the old cable is a home made interface, but its rs232 style, cant use it on my new laptop

i tried a usb to sieral converter...but that didnt do anything either. vista wont let the driver for the converter to be installed, it choses its own drivers no matter waht

Damn if I was close to you I'd have your laptop fixed up and running lol! Or try out my laptop/cable cause it works.

Hmmm Vista eh... That could be your problem. Is the usb cable you have known to work on Vista? Or did they even say?

Why can't you re-load windows on the old laptop? Is it a hardware problem?

ya the cable has a vista driver...they say it should work. (side note: i called aldlcable.com today and they said there may be an issue with the cable, they said theyll test it and send a new one back and let me know if the last one was faulty or not)

i dont know what the issue is, it has windows 98 and an upgrade to XP. so my brother tried and it wont let you wipe out either one without removing the other? im not much into that area of computers.... maybe thats the prob. my brother knows tho, and he said it wont work. ive got a few other friends are into computers that ill have take a look at it. but im really aiming for this cable to work, i didnt jsut spend $80 for a cable that didnt work

they also told me to check between pin a and m and see if there was about 5v. i had already closed the shop and didnt have a voltameter handy so i tried a 194 bulb, but it didnt light up. ill check the voltage in the morn.

he did mean my pin A & M on the aldl connector...not the cable....right?

Probably car side, but check the cable too I suppose. Yeah upgrade discs I don't mess with. But you could wipe it with the 98 (or a boot disc) then try the upgrade again. Those upgrades don't let you install from scratch on a blank HD unfortunately cause they are an upgrade.

ya, dont have a boot disk. bought the laptop for $100 from the flight deck officer on my ship 3 years ago
