  • Fiero Engine Build

I am needing to build a new engine for my 1987 Fiero GT with a 5 speed.

I am looking for roughly in the 200hp range. This is my DD since my Grand Am blew another tranny and i have had enough of sinking money into that car. So my only vehicle now is the Fiero.

I am willing to spend 4-5k right away, and this needs to be done soon as the engine in the fiero just let go. I am looking more towards a crate engine as the city i live in does not really have the resorces to rebuild an engine quick and efficently. So a new block from http://www.engine-parts.com/GMV6/gmv6stock.html is my best option right now.

I am looking to keep it a 2.8 just for ease of installation as i do not have the time or facilities to pull the harness out of my GA to drop the entire 3400 into the fiero and make mounts. So that is my budget and i do have a full good working 3400 to my disposal as i am just parting out my GA. I am willing to do some custom work providing it will not take alot of time and is fairly simple. I need my fiero back on the road ASAP. So all ideas for a build would be much appreciated.

I just dont want a simple rebuilt 2.8, im looking for a bit more power for now till i have the time and money to do a 3800 or ls1 swap. which ever i decide, but that is a few few years down the road.

Why not use the engine that is in the grandma and put it in the fiero? Unless it doesn't have the V6 in the GA.

Its not that simple, I have to run a new wiring harness to run the 3400 out of the GA. Plus make new mounts along with a few other things. This has to be done right away or i would do the custom work to put in the 3400, But time does not permit to do so.

Yeah your gonna be wasting time and money chasing power out of the 2.8....

Drop the 3400 in and use the existing wiring harness in the fiero. Then do the ECM swap (I forget the # but there's a write up on fiero.nl somewhere) and tune it with that since it will then be using DIS.

To get 200hp out of a 2.8 without boosting is gonna be quite a challenge, and the motor will likely become a hybrid with a 3400 top end on it anyways so just go with the full 3400.

Cheapest quickest thing to do is probably plop another 2.8 in there or throw a 3.1mpfi in there. Will not be 200hp, but it'll last for a long time (if taken care off) .

take it from me, i did the whole 3.4 iron head thing....waste of time. several thousand later and 3 engines i decided to go with the 3500. no looking back now. its not all that complicated, making mounts is easy, you only really need to make 1 mount and it doesnt take anything fancy...just a junkyard, a drill and about 30 mins.

the ecm swap is called 1227730. its a little time consuming, but well worth the hour or two you put into it. all in all, dont waste your money on another iron head engine. TRUST ME (several people said the same thing im telling you, i didnt listen to them, i wish i would have by my 4th engine)

i made 151whp and 192ft.lbs with an iron head 3.4. my mods were
zero decked block, crane 272 cam, huge crane springs, 1.6 roller rockers, ported heads, ported lower intake, trueleo intake, 65mm tb, trueleo headers, 2.5 inch exhaust, 24# injectors, 7730 ecm, centerforce dual friction clutch, hv oil pump, polished combustion chambers, there is more that i cannot think of right now...but you get the point. all that for 150 hp....what a waste!
3500, 1280 cam and PR, ls6 valve springs, port and polished heads, ported lim, ported uim, 4.3 70mm tb, ported trueleo headers and y pipe ALL FOR SALE (minus the car)
96 LT4 6spd corvette. 355, AI 215cc LT4 Comp CNC Heads, Prope SRS pistons, Ported intake, ARH long tubes, Corsa Indy Pace 4:10 gears
            2012 Chevy Sonic Turbo 6spd
1970 M35A2 Deuce and a Half, Spin on filters, Turned up IP, HIDs, Flat Black, 11.00x20 singles.

a internally stock 3400 with a decent exhaust and intake with a little tuning will get you right about 200 WHP (5 speed tranny). Seen it several times now. Add in some better exhaust manifolds, a little porting, bigger TB and upgraded valve springs with a little more tuning and she'll scream.
