The combustion chamber on the 3100 aluminum heads are much smaller than the iron heads on your 3.4. If you put them on your block, your compression will jump through the roof. That's why the pistons would need to be changed for 3400 SFI pistons.Franz

ok, so thats why,,,,so when they say 3x00 swap u can use 3100 or 3400 heads and intakes,,,, but u must use the 3400 (because of the bore) fwd pistons....so u can also use 3500 heads??? ..i can get a 3400 core motor cheap,,,,i work at a junk yard,,,so sweet!

You will need tuning anyway, so once that is sorted out, the stock pistons can be used. The compression with the 3500 top end isn't too bad. Its usable with the 3100 or 3400 heads, but 3500 would certainly be the best. 98 3100 aren't my choice. 2000+ 3100 or 3400 for heads, as they are better casting quality and have a 1mm larger intake valve than the 98 3100.Ben

Yes, just swap in the 3400 pistons/rods.. then put the 3400 heads, UIM and plenum on with the propper gaskets and the easy work is done. you'll have to use the 3400 headgaskets, not the 3.4 Camaro ones.
I'd also suggest that you swap in a Crane H260-2 cam while you can, It will make better use of the new top end then your stock cam will.
