it was a piston, #4. it seems as tho the piston broke or the wristpin did. either way there is a little bit of contact between the piston and head, but not enough to even score the head. the valves are strait and not leaking. there are no valve marks on the face of the piston. you can push the piston down into its bore and feel it pop or click before it moves with the crank. it does, however, move with the crank when the crank is turned.
there is no gouging of the cyl liner and no damage to the cross hatching.
so i need a new piston and a rod. there is no metal in the oil, so i assume the crank is fine.
i havent gotten any further apart, just one head off.
