Jon...
Before you put anything else on the Oil Pump Drive to replace it... it might be worth investigating the source of the problem as being from incorrect gear thrust. I'm uncertain how you can properly investigate this... but the two things to be mindful of are ANY wear at all in between the bronze thrust bushing in the upper portion of the Oil Pump Drive and the drilled steel pin that rides inside of it. This component may have some aspect of flexing action caused by the unavoidable "Helical Gear Walk" that occurs when the camshaft is vectoring all that energy through the back end of the cam and literally trying to twist the OPD away from itself like a thirsty kid unscrewing the top off of a Pop Bottle.
The last thing to consider is whether there is any play to be felt in the engine block hole that supports the Oil Pump Drive...such to the extent that the twisting gear forces from the Melzy Camshaft are literally bending or pushing the entire Oil Pump Drive at the interface of the gears backwards from the proper centerline of the block hole supporting the OPD solidly...and thereby changing the gear contact relationships enough to make it wear so oddly. If the gear damage is NOT uniform along the entire length of each tooth...then it is strong evidence in support of this theory. Putting in anything else to solve this problem will lead to your correct diagnosis of a complete failure of the OPD...and knowing your car... that would probably happen when you were making a goodly amount of horsepower... at very high RPM. By the way... the color of that OPD gear looks more like Brass than Bronze... I'm curious to know who made it and what the metal assay turns out to be. Bronze is such a tough, durable and self-lubricating metal that invariably looks more Brown than Yellow if the alloy is mixed properly... Hmmmmm.Last edited by 60dgrzbelow0; 04-02-2010, 12:47 PM.

This was a long time ago that I had this issue, I now use a stock gear on a stock type cam drive... I have no issues now. Its the same block, same oil pump and same drive setup minus the gear change, so in the end it was either a bad design on the cam, or just wear that was giong to happen with a bronze setup.
