  • timing gears?

a few days ago i was talking to a co-worker gearhead about what all i had left untill my engine was complete.

one thing that came up was a timing chain. he told me about timing gears that replace the chain completly! sounds pretty cool to me..

is there some available for the 3400? all they all custom "make fit" type of thing?

also what kind of timing chain do u guys recomend? chances are thats what im gonna get..

I don't who makes a good timing chain for these motors, but as for the timing gears its not worth it unless your motor is pure evil. I had a set pete jackson gears that almost took out one of my big blocks, the damn cam button that was provided with the gears fell apart it just killed a bad ass 3 piece timing cover.

Timing gears aren't available for these engines. As far as timing chains, check out this thread: http://60degreev6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38836

Gear drives are for posers. There are no benefits in using a gear drive. Harmonics from the crank pass directly to the cam affecting valve timing and ignition timing, if you have a distributor. It gets worse with RPM.

Regular people use chains, pros use belts.

gears are good for motors with very high lift and very stiff valve springs, nothing that you could drive on the street. Other than that there not worth it

Timing gears would be nice for the DOHC. It's REALLY annoying having to either cut the timing chain or the remove rear head (so the oil pump drive can be removed so the int shaft can slide out the back) to take the crankshaft out.
