  • 62mm tb questions

is it a good idea to swap to the 62mm tb I have a 1994 cutlass supreme 3100sfi engine.

unfortunately not. The thing is, if you did other work to the engine internals, it would be helpful.

There just wouldn't be any need for it unless you had head an intake work done. The 52mm is pretty decent sized for the engine to start with.

      Well, IMO it wouldn't hurt...

It's made my otherwise stock 3.1 feel a bit more dynamic, in that it doesn't feel like it crashes into such a wall at 4500rpm anymore. Hell, turning 6k isn't that hard for it now.

A 62mm TB will help as long as you also port the upper and lower intakes (porting the heads would be beneficial as well). As far as your other question, swap over the 3400 intakes along with a 62mm TB, do some head work, get a set of headers, etc. The usual stuff to increase HP..........

There are no readily available production cams. That is why I never mentioned it. You would have to get a regrind from somewhere.

First, those are solid rollers, not hydraulic rollers. Second, they won't have the cam sync ring on them.

                    3.1L MPFI vs. 3100 SFI

Those are Gen II cams and his '94 is a Gen III engine.

yes, I was aware of them being non Gen III cams but, i didn't think about the losses.

Well, if you have an OBDI 3x00 built with no cam sensor it seems like it would be a good bet. But, yes, they are mechanical. For the benefits though, I would go with the mechanical roller if I had the money. But, i guess all you guys are sitting on hydraulic rollers that are stock. So, that really would be a thing to keep.

I guess a mechanical cam wouldn't be a worthwhile upgrade for someone just looking to add some power though.

Does anyone know the difference in how a mechanical and hydraulic roller cam are made? I was wondering due to the fact that the differences would be different than a normal flat-tappet hydraulic vs. mechanical.

I thought also that the Gen II cams wouldn't even fit in the Gen III blocks, but I could be on something.

I dunno, the bore is the same. I don't see any reason why not so long as you remove the lifter guide plates to fit other rockers. Never can say I tried it myself...

Maybe Ben or Brad still have a picture of the Gen II vs. the Gen III cam. I thought that it was more a matter of it wouldn't sit right in the channel or something like that. I've never tried it either though, so it is more speculation on my part than anything. I thought we had a big topic about this back when were at gmforums
