  • 05 Equinox 3400

I was driving it today, and noticed that even with AWD and being a bigger vehical, it hauled ass man! I mean, I'd like to stuff that motor into the malibu and THEN mod it... jeeezus. Im not really to up-to-date on my post 2002 60 degrees though... but im thinking it's also the PCM tuning that makes that bitch haul too??

That's what several people have said. But GM rates that 3400 as the same hp as other cars. It has the same crank trigger setup as the 3500 though. With a 3500-ish plenum with a TB on the center top.

    Probably gearing too.

            2008 Aisin AF33 (M45/M09)
Aisin AF33 five-speed front or all-wheel-drive electronically controlled automatic transaxle
            2008 MODEL YEAR SUMMARY

            Applications
The Pontiac Torrent, Chevrolet Equinox, and the Suzuki XL-7 will be carryover in the 2008 Model Year

            PRODUCT FEATURES:

TALLER FINAL DRIVE RATIO FOR INCREASED FUEL EFFICIENCY: Higher gearing is used to lower revolutions at highway speeds, reducing engine pumping losses and increasing fuel efficiency. The final drive ratio is 2.484:1, which replaced the previous 2.70:1.

TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE INTEGRATED ONTO CASE
The transmission control module is moved from the vehicle onto the case of the transmission. Integration of the TCM onto the transmission case allows the TCM to also function as a Neutral Safety Back Up Switch.

TORQUE CONVERTER ATTACHED BY SIX FLEX PLATE LUGS
Instead of three lug bolts attaching the torque converter to the flex plate on the crankshaft, three additional lugs have been added to bring the attachment points to six for high mileage durability.

            LOW MAINTENANCE
            The M45/M09 is certified "fill-for-life".

            OVERVIEW
The Aisin AF33-5 (M45, M09) electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission was originally used in Saturn applications, and now is used by the Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent, and the Suzuki XL-7 in both front-drive and all-wheel-drive variations. The differential housing on all-wheel-drive applications has a unique seal to accommodate the power take-off unit (PTU). The differential has an additional ring gear attached to the front differential carrier. The ring gear drives a pinion gear and shaft connected to a two-piece propeller shaft. The propeller shaft carries torque to the Rear Differential Module. The PTU does not share the transaxle fluid, instead the housing contains its own hypoid gear oil. The rear differential uses a single-gerotor pump and clutch pack that automatically engages the rear wheels when either front wheel slips.

The AF33 is a three-axis five-speed automatic built by Aisin at its Anjo City plant in Japan. It was developed to package a five-speed automatic into the space of a manual transaxle. The M45 and M09 are identical in size. The M45/M09 mates to the 3.4L V6, and the 3.6L high-feature overhead cam engines.

so with that said its prob 2.70:1. for the 05 equinox. which that would explain why they seem faster.
that and some steep gears compared to the ratios we get

Having five forward gears will help, too. Closer ratios, and lower gearing will definitely make it feel seat of the pants fast.
