  • Sunday thrash...

And the 3400 is in! Ported heads, radiused valves, ported intake and exhaust manifolds. Along with the 2 1/2 exhaust, hi flow cat, 10 series flowmaster, and FAFB 3,000 stall converter. I have a DHP power tuner and wideband, so I'm in for a tuning fit. I pissed off the water pump, so it's leaking on me, but it'll get swapped out tomorrow.

I have a running, but slightly noisy '97 3100 complete engine available. It has the updated exhaust manifold in the rear instead of the log I was expecting.

NICE! Looks like your set to tune that beast. How hard was the swap in the Lumina, basically a drop in? Where did you get the shift kit as well?

The 3100 probably needs a new timing chain and guide. That will quieten it down a lot.

Nice! Who ported your heads and intakes? What have you got for a throttlebody?

Sidewinder, it was basically a drop in. the only thing funny was the alternator brace bars. As I was running out of time, I just left them out. Make sure you have the MAP bracket for a 3400 as it's a bit different, as well. The coil bracket is the same, and the front bank far left cylinder head bolt has to be swapped for the 3100 as it has a threaded top for the motor mount bolt.

The shift kit is my own making. I just put the meanest springs I had laying around and a few washers in the accumulators in the pan. (1-2 and 2-3). It'll chirp second from 50% throttle and up. I plan on raising the line pressure and installing the 33/37 chain and sprockets in the future for a 3.73 ratio. I should already have the 3.33 gearset in the back.

Blackbombshell, I ported the heads, (went for broke) manifolds and radiused the valves. I have a fair amount of porting experience as a shop I used to work at ported heads and had a flow bench. Plus I have a friend with a Serdi. I wasn't able to flow these heads, but you get the knack for what moves air. As stated in other threads, the 3400 heads don't need much work, Just knock down the bumps, blend the bowls, profile and lower the guide bosses. I went a lot further by opening the exhaust port and deshrouding the valves in the chamber. The manifolds I was limited to the short side radiuses and a general clean up and port match.

Sadly the 3400 I got was minus a throttlebody so I'm running around on the 3100 stock one. The cylinder chambers were full of crusted oil and I was worried at first, but every part in the engine, once cleaned up showed almost zero wear. After tearing the heads down I noticed the valve guides were too high is a couple cylinders, allowing the rubber to pop out of the valve stem seal and just float up and down the valve stem.

IssacHayes, I ripped the timing cover off for a look as I needed to use the bolts for the 3400, and the chain wasn't hugely worn. It did sound like a chain, and was throwing cam sensor codes left and right. I assumed it to be from the chain worn so much the sync was out. The engine ran strong except for the noise and a death beat couldn't kill it. Good "in the mean time" motor for someone to run if theirs blows up. I took it to 6800 rpm, it just wouldn't pull past that. Up to 6,000 that engine got me a best 0-60 in 6.98 seconds by my G-Tech and has a dozen Honda kills under it's belt. I had a draw with a V6 Accord and another draw with an Acura (Legend?) 3.2l

Hoooo... this converter flashes to 3700 rpm when you nail it with the brakes on. Wheelspin city!!! I pulled a 6.7second 0-60 with a half assed retardedly safe tune and stock shift points. This is going to be fun.

As I get closer to the optimum tune, this engine continues to amaze me. I've gotten a wheelspin laden 6.4 0-60, which puts me in RX-8 territory. I love the converter, it gives the engine right now authority in any gear. I can't wait to get the 3.73 FDR in there. I'm still juggling shift points and converter lockup points for smoother driving when I don't have my foot welded to the floor. I'll have a video shortly of a decent 0-60.

All this with the stock cam and 3100 throttlebody. What size is it anyway? I'm probably in need of a larger one. What size is a stock 3400?

3100=52m. 3400=56mm. 3500=65mm. But of course you can't use a 3500 TB it's electric. But you can bolt up the plenum.

Yeah that's a high stall. ~3000-3500 is when my 3100 wakes up so I'd say it's similar to yours. So you got it right in the powerband. I thought my friends stock 97 lumina 3100 was crazy geared and will spin the tires easy from a stop.. you have more HP a higher stall, and soon higher gears.... LOL crazy.

Lol! I'm stuck in the car for now, so I may as well have a bit of fun with it. My neighbor is taunting me with a '98 or '99 Sunfire 4 door sitting in his back yard with a blown trans. I really want to get this J body and jam my engine and trans in it. Talk about a cheap thrill!
