so did you find out if its forged or not? id really like to know so i can snag a couple
Just got back from a week-long trip. The 3500 cranks are at the shop, as soon as I get over there (probably after holidays) I'll compare a spare 3.4 crank to one.
i thought it was a bad idea to intensionally impose a harmonic on the crank. aren't those bad? like the argument of to dampen or not. i'd never consider tapping any crank with a hammer.
If you tap your crank with a hammer and it rings it doesn't mean that its forged, it only tells that your crank is not cracked cast iron cranks will still ring. The hammer test is a old machine shop trick to make sure that crank is still good before the customer leaves and they do any work to it. Now the ringing will be different from cast iron, nodular iron, cast steel, forged steel, or billet steel but they all ring, not thud or clunk

every cast crank ive tested like that had a clunk. when i bought a forged crank it rang like a bell. so if you want to know if a crank is cast or forged, how would you test to make sure. because something doesnt add up
Well i just went out to my garage and tapped the 3400 crank i have sitting on the shelf. It rings. Just FYI for all you guys Does it make a difference what kinda of hammer you use? cause there's hardened vs non-hardened and stuff.... i used a ball-peen

Well, today a 189 crank rang like a bell and the 3500 cenak rang as well, but not as long.
I think the ringing is irrelevent and not consistant.
Being a machinist, I can tell by looking that the 3500 *7489* crank is machined on most surfaces and the 981 (3.307 stroke, 1.999" rod journal from a 3.4) crank is definately fully cast and only machined for clearances.
