I re-used them once before... And I did have a HG failure... But then even with new bolts I had the same failure... I leaned toward it being the Felpro Headgaskets since I have yet to have an issue when using the GM ones.

Who makes the strongest timing chain?

so from what motor has an interchangable timing chain with a 00+3400, mostly because i came accross these from 3.1's and 3100's on summit. but ther earlier 3100's were not roller cams IIRC. so whats interchangable to what?
If i understand whats different about the cam gear on double true roller timing chains for flat tapped cams, why isnt the end of the roller cams changed to accept the 3 bolt and pin... or is there a huge issue with the clearance on the timing cover

Clearance for the timing cover is an issue, hence the reason for the requirement of mods to the crank for the TCE one.-Brad-

yes I did get it, I believe the cam gear is GM. it says GM on the part number anyways so im assuming its general motors. I was planning on taking pics and weighing everthing this weekend. I will probly pull my old set out in a few weekssigpic

Sounds good, Keep us updated.
and Bob as that thread notes, its the physical chain that touches the crank, not the gear.

The Sealed Power set uses a GM Cam Gear, but the chain is crap.
I am not sure on the crank gear, but it appears to be heat treated.2000 Grand Am GT

My experience was that after I looked at the chain from the Sealed Power Set, I was not going to use it. I will be using the GM cam gear and the heat treated crank gear that was included in the set, but I opted to order the GM chain for piece of mind. Which reminds me I still need to send it out for cryo treatment.
Gears: Notice the cam gear is a stock GM gear and the crank gear appears to be heat treated
Chain: GM chain on the left and the Sealed Power on the right

All of this timing chain talk makes me wonder how the DOHC ones hold up. I know us DOHC guys don't run as high of spring pressure as you pushrod guys, but we do have twice the valves to open and 4 cams to turn with it.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

well I guess I wont post the pics I just took lol.
here is what they weigh if any1 wants to compare
519g for the cam sprocket
120g for the crank sprocket
403g for the chain
the chain does look a lot different. wonder if its different than the cloyessigpic

That Sealed power set looks exactly like the second set I got from Cloyes... a GM cam gear and then a "heat treated" crank... and trust me its not heat treated well if it is at all.
This is what my setup did to that similar set Note the look of the chain in the background... Same set.
This was a stock GM cam gear but I think the looseness of the chain or design of the chain vs this gear was what caused the marks on the cam gear. But I've also seen these small marks on higher mileage GM cam gears so that may just be excelled wear from heavy springs and radical cam.
Either way I would not trust any crank gear that has the part number above on it since mine began to hook on me.
My first every cloyes set fared much worse than this, and I think that was before they started to use GM cam gears since that cam gear I posted from my STOCK 3400 was trashed.
I'm getting to the point where a double roller may not be a bad investment.
Also on the chain... a GM one is a Rocker Joint it only bends in one direction, the New Cloyes sets and the Sealed Power set aparently are both Round Pin designs, that allow the chain to bend back on itself. This may also cause accelerated wear since the chain can bend in more.Last edited by 3400-95-Modified; 01-17-2011, 09:32 AM.
