If you're looking to get rid of noise, GM did it for you in the 3900.

Dodge had a similar timing chain issue with their 3.9 magnum and released an updated timing kit that included an active tensioner a lot like this one to eliminate the noise.

How about the timing set from the DOHC cars? They are quite a thick chain, and they have a active tensioner from what i remember.

You won't be able to use the timing set, as the 3900 has VVT. The tensioner would be the only thing you'd need.

As for the 3.4 DOHC, can someone find a pic for comparison?

            Edit: Found one.

that chain looks beefy.. but the big question is the upper sprocket mounting.. Single bolt or 3 bolt?

The dohc uses one bolt but it also uses the cam BELT sprocket to help mount it.

                  dohc timing chain:

If someone fabricated a cam gear like the tdc's yet made it fit the pushrod style mounting area, all we would need to buy is the crank gear and chain! Probably grind out the timing cover too, but that is a given.

Possibly some one could fabricate a centric ring that would seat into the DOHC cam gear so that we could reuse our bolt and be sure we had no cam sproket runout, but i really do like this idea. And also just as a bit of information, the DOHC crank sproket is a very tight press fit whereas our are not to recall.

Depending on how much you wanna spend... I dont think you need a bigger chain as much as you need a stronger material chain. If a stronger chain could be made from better materials and keeping it the same size would probably be better.
