Earlier this year, Motor Trend reported on a new V6-powered Corvette it dubbed the Sting Ray, which was reportedly in deep cover. Powered by a version of the Impala's 3.9-liter V6, the Kappa-platform roadster in development was reported to be Chevy's own version of the Saturn Sky / Pontiac Solstice. Now, dealer Rick…

The solstice/etc should have V6 as standard engine, and turbo V6 as the hot one in the first place. And it should of been mid-engine like the Fiero was.

I do hope it's not called the corvette. That would make the vette name a joke.

Why would people think it is actually going to be a Vette? when the article clearly stated it was on the solstice platform. Coining it the Baby Vette might be more along the lines.

That like calling an S-10 a V6 Silverado.

I think its because one of the potential names was the Sting Ray, which dates back to the late 50s (early 60s?) Vettes.

After hearing that Dodge will dump the V10 in the Viper, and replace it with a V8, I can see GM doing something just as stupid. Dodge is loseing money with the V10 cars, so they want to totally kill it off, and the new Viper will just be an SRT8, or hemi, or something.

Didn't really look into it, but if Dodge does that, then GM is just as capable of something equally stupid.

To be honest, I am suprised that they have not come out with a BASE corvette with a 5 banger yet. If the Camaro can get an anemic 3.1, then why not the Corvette?

Not sure where you got your info but Dodge has no intention of dropping the V10. It's what makes the Viper a Viper. They did fool around with other engines in the Viper platform, but those vehicles were shelved/scrapped. As far as losing money, the Viper is a halo car, something to beat on the Corvette group with, and production race. It's not a money maker, the Caravan is.

I had not read on it in a while. Could be that what I was hearing was from before the idea was scrapped.

Even still..... Just the idea that they were even THINKING it.....

The Viper's gonna be around a while. Here's the '08 ACR. It'll make 1200 lbs of downforce at 130, and pull 1.5g's. Power plant's the same as a regular '08 at 600 hp.

GM did the equivalent of that many years ago except instead of a V6 they used a 305. Just about everybody knows Corvette and 350 back in those days was almost synonymous.

I read a story line a couple of days ago stating that the Solstice has the worst dependability of the GM cars based on AAA reports in a comparison of new vehicle stats across the top manufacturers domestic and imports. If the 3.9 version is front wheel drive that would stink.
