  • Guys running N2O,a few timing and fuel questions

I am cosidering installing a nitrous setup on my '94 cutlass. First, would it be better to run a wet or dry setup? Second, what is a safe power adding limit? Would 50-75 hp be reasonable? Third,I was wondering how I would go about retarding the timing since my 3100 SFI uses a DIS? Fourth, are any fuel system upgrades required? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

you can run a 50 shot without any other modifications done to the vehicle. i use a wet system since it adds the fuel along with the nitrous. if you want to go bigger, consider picking up a MSD dis4 with the coil pack adaptors. that unit has a single stage retard thats great for nitrous and it allows you to adjust how much timing is pulled when it is engaged. no fuel system upgrades are required.

Zex wet kit # 82021 is a bolt on kit.

55 shot is good. You can run a 75 shot if you want. But too much of that can pop a piston. Premium fuel is a must of course.

        nitrous questions

FastGT31,thanks for the info on the MSD DIS4. That sounds like the smart way to control the timing. I wasn't sure if most guys used the MSD or a chip tuned for the nitrous.

blackbombshell95,I'll have to check into the ZEX kit. I guess I'll stay around a 50 shot. The 75 shot is tempting, but this is my daily driver,so I definitely don't want to hurt the motor.

Thanks for the info guys. This gets me pointed in the right direction. I think that I'll go with a wet kit and start out with a 50 shot and go from there.

Im runnin a NX mainline kit. Using 75 shot with no timing retard. Engine loves it.. NX recomends no more than 20 horse per cylinder on a stock engine. You wont need to pull timing if you keep the shot 75 or under.

Any more, you might want to pull a few degrees

Just for the info, im almost positive that NX and NOS measure their shot ratings at the wheels, and ZEX measures at crank

              nitrous questions

JMo60,thanks for the additional info. I'm glad to hear that I won't have to retard the timing if I go with a 75 shot or less. I saw how much the MSD DIS4 goes for. Ouch! I just want a simple, fairly inexpensive jump in power. I think that a 50 shot will do me just fine. I'll just have to remember to not get greedy. Famous last words when using nitrous.

Like this will really help you, but I used the dual stage power shot system from N.O.S. and succesfully run a 100, or 140 shot on 92 fuel, and +2° adv. base, with no problems. I suggest AC delco plugs, NGK, or Champion like to get chewed up if ur running low Psi on the fuel side.
(the electrode naturaly sitcks out farther than AC plugs)

                  nitrous

Ortie666,I'm going to try and not get too carried away with the nitrous. That's impressive that you were able to use that much though. I'm curious, are you still using the factory pistons?

FYI, i used grand prix turbo plugs with my nitrous. 89-90 TGP plugs are i beleive 2 heat ranges colder

You can order NGK regular plugs at 2 degrees colder than stock.

Ive actualy tryed those too, Even with the Ign. system on the car they run like crap normaly driving, and will still burn up under n2o opperation.. From the seal to the base there still longer than the stock heat ranged AC's..Its hard to say, in my other motor's I always run NGK so im not against them I just havent had luck with them and nitrous yet..
