  • Aw Crap!

Looks like i figured out why the 3500 was smoking so bad...

3 of the valve seals on the front are pulled off the guides.

And now, Compelling reasons not to use SBC Copper shims as spring seats...

I figured that the springs would stay centered, guess not.. that's probably what pulled the seals off the guides. I apologize to all the people i told to do it this way, Others still haven't had problems but it only takes 1. Luckily there was no real carnage.. just a little extra valvetrain noise and some burnt oil.

I guess i'll be ordering LS1 seats and a new set of valve seals this winter..

Rev limiter is @ 7009.26 RPM

Nice vid.. i have the one from Comp cams saved somewhere that shows how beehives are better than standards. I'll upload it to my putfile if i can find it.

What made you come to that number? I thought GM rated the 660's bottom end to a 7200RPM max (or maybe that was just the rods?).

.045. I was going to ask you on your v6z24 thread if you had room for the LS1 seats:P

7k max on the rods (till the new PM rods..now I dunno).

Tunerpro rounds the numbers a bit.. iirc i put in 7000 and it rounded up slightly.

Nobody knows how strong these rods are, i have a feeling that with my luck i'll be the first to find out.

Thanks Ben, the current shims are .015" and i'm pretty sure i've got plenty of clearance for another .030".

Back from Florida, from an 18hr drive.. whew! Catching up on a few threads before bed. Could there be any damage to the head form the valve walking around?

The spring is what is walking, not the valve. The spring spins around slowly with beehives, which doesn't hurt. Having a small shim that may or may not be under the spring however is not a good thing. Aluminum is soft and the spring would eat into the head if this happens.

I thought the beehive springs didnt move, that it was only the straight springs that moved around? I could be wrong though
