  • Intake on my 3500!

Believe it or not, when I did my 3500 swap by the time I got to putting the air hose on (the one with the IAT and MAF on it) I just wanted to get things done, so I dropped a K&N dropin in the stock airbox, used the stock hose and everything (which bairly goes onto the 65mm TB, took force) and just left it.

Now I know that this has to be hurting it. I am not a fan of warm air intakes, and I rather not chop my fenderwell to put a filter in there. I am hoping to just cut out a hole in the bottom of the airbox, and run some type of hose lower in the engine bay so it can suck more cool air along with the little funnel that is in the airbox stock without much risk of sucking water as well.

Good idea? Any good ideas for attaching the hose to the bottom of the airbox? What about some sort of heat resistant flexy hose for me to run down there? I've looked at drier vent hose but it just has ghetto written all over it...

What about the rest of it? I don't really want to modify the MAF... just keep the stock MAF? Should I even bother getting some curved metal pieces and replacing the stock flexy hose? What about the rubber bungs for the IAT?

Also wtf is the big black round thing that hangs off the intake hose for? It's hard to explain, but it was on my coupe but it's not on my sedan... (both 96 3100 GP's).

you have a good idea. if you can improve how the air gets to the air box, a cold air intake wouldnt give any more increases.

the round thing hanging off your air box is likley to increase the volume so under quick throttle changes it stays quiet.

The round thing is probably a resonator. Mine has one, and 95+ they put ribs after the resonator too to quieten it down even more. Even stock when I got the car my dad wondered what that sucking engine noise was and if it was ok or not. On mine below it is a 3" opening in the fender, so I cut the bottom of the resonator off so it can draw air from there as well as the snout of the filter. The snout/snorkel thing shrinks down very small on the end less than the TB plate so this helps with more air coming in. Also the side of my box I opened up but can't find any good small tubing to run down for colder air..

Your idea sounds good. Sounds like you have room to open the bottom up. (mine sits on the metal fender so bottom doesn't help).

I'd use fiberglass or even PVC/ABS pipe glue as I think the box is likely ABS plastic with fibers inside to mold a snout and attach a tube to.

Swap the coupe with the sedans snout to get rid of that round thing. Resonator probably doesn't help with flow and more sound is cool! Not sure where the box opens up on yours but if you are cutting this part off it doesn't matter unless you want to swap to your sedan first to make it more quiet.

i once used an exhaust hose from a boat for a cai. sounds goofy but i dont know the actual term for the hose. but it connects to the exhuast manifold(boat exhaust is watercooled). its 3in id i think and it had no problem staying cool. it was made out of some sort of high temperature fabric. i also had a hard time bending it due to the thickness but i only needed a slight bend.
here's some. i remember the tube wasnt too cheap. it costed me around $40 for a 3ft section

what kind of CFM is the stock air intake good for?. its possible that there will be no measurable increase over the stock air box.. kinda depends if it can meet the CFM requirements of the engine

The way I view it, the stock air box on mine was a restriction since the snout where it got air the diameter was smaller than the TB plate....

On a modified engine it will become more of a restriction. I noticed on a 98 small port malibu it had a much larger air box with a bigger filter than mine, and a much bigger air snout.

Man I bet those would be good for turbo charge pipes! I never thought of using it, and I left a bunch on the boat when it was sold. They offer up to 16"OD

You could be a test dummy for the Wizair intake for the 3400's. If you don't try it I will in a few months.

Even with my modded air box I can put my hand on one of the 3 "ports" where it draws air into the box and it wants to pull my hand into it when just revving it under no load. That tells me that with the other 2 openings it's not enough, not sure with 3 opened up it's enough to not be a restriction..

does your stock intake have a "snorkle"? if it does or has an opening under or around the box i would just remove the box and make an intake with aluminum tubing, in my malibu we can fit 3" tubing through the stock opening without cutting

also, the stock tubing will colapse under load at time so its greatly advised to replace it with hard tubing if you go for a modified air box design

its really not hard to get the stock air boxes to flow better but it does take time and effort to design the new openings correctly and exicute them effciently

Yes it does. I have the stock snorkel, the resonator bottom opened up (to draw in air from the 3" opening in fender), and another hole on the side facing the motor, which I need to get some good tubing to run that down to the ground... The snorkel's opening is smaller than the TB plate, but yet the end of it where it goes into the box is larger, so opening the resonator part helps.

The problem with the 3" opening is getting pipe between the fender and the battery to get to that hole. Otherwise modding the stock box to use that hole would work great.

What do you mean stock tubing collapsing? If you make the box less restrictive, then there would be less vacuum load on the tubing, and it would want to collapse less.. Mine is already "smashed" where the ribs are because the distance between TB and airbox is shorter since I have the 3500 plenum which pushes the tube together more. The motor doesn't move much at all either with my poly insert.

Where can I get the Wizair intake? I googled for a site but I can't find one...

If it looks good I'll get it to test it out.

Ouch $200 for a box and I still have to move my battery and washer fluid... I think I'll just see about hacking up my stock box
