  • what turbo to use???

i have an 85 4x4 jimmy, that is getting transformed into a pickup and i am putting 3.4L in it but im rebuilding the motor.. my plan is to run a remote mounted turbo in the bed (so the turbo isn't getting cover in shit when offroading like a few other applications i have seen). i have access at a junkyard to any turbo for $150. im not lookin for crazy power, but i would like a turbo that spools up by or around 3000rpm, not to much lag, and runs anywhere from 5-20lbs boost. i plan on running iron heads for now,( i read they where better for low end torque) and probably going to tbi, if i get the ambition to, but i was wondering if anyone had any suggestion on a turbo that i can get at the junkyard that would help me out, or any other suggestions to my build it would be appreciated. i have been looking and the only thing i can find is 50% of people saying use a cummings turbo and 50% saying completely wrong turbo for the 3.4. so any suggestions would be awsome.

    thanks.

The chances of finding the right turbo in the jy are slim and it will probably need a rebuild adding to the cost. Selecting the "right" turbo is necessary to get the desired performance. I have a new borgwarner/schwitzer T04B H/P .84ar for $300 + shipping if you can use it.

typically anything you will find in the junkyard will be a t-too small (t25), or small borgwarner stuff, mostly on 4 cyl motors. you may be able to run a couple of these, however that makes the setup a lot more complex. on the opisite end of the scale, a holset from a dodge deisel do work well but will have lag. about the only thing in between i can think of is a thunderbird turbocoupe t3, however its still a bit small.

if you are wheeling, you will want to stay on the small side so it spools up quick, however would be out of its efficiency by 4500-5000rpm. this will provide the best torque. i knew a guy who had a very small turbo (off a mazda 626) on a diesel toyota pickup. it spooled up by 1200rpm and made huge torque, and worked very well offroad.

that is perfect! i rarley get over 4000. Did the guy you know have it rear mounted or up front?but anywayyou think a t3 would be good for the torque that i would want? like i said this is a daily driver, not looking for crazy boost but as much as i can for low end.

          thanks!

now that i think about it i am putting a 5 speed in so i will prolly rev out a little more but still its an everyday driver, and i don;t think i will go over 5000. other sources on the web have said use like a t3/t4 or a t04e turbo but they were all runnig like 300+ hp, and for my purpoases i think that i would prolly only want around like 250 or so but im still not to familiar with turbos and such.. still researching but not having much luck with turbo sizes and such for my wants..

If you get reallll lucky you might be able to find a GMC sy/ty setup in a dead project car... ANYTHING is possible! lol

if your hoping to do this junkyard, keep your eye out for a t-bird turbo coupe. they are about the biggest turbo you can get from a junkyard without going holset. the t-bird turbo is a t3 and ford flange, what just about every t3 and t3/t4 is based off of, so if its too small, then upgrading is basicly just bolting on another turbo.

You really don't need that kind of power for any type of sensible off roading.

well its a daily driver too... so its gotta be able to hold its own on the highway as well as off road..

which it wont do very well at if it has a 5spd....

sorry but autos are a lot easier to wheel and will make you look a lot better in the end when you dont stall it 5 times trying to climb the same hill....

your right about the auto being better for the mud but stalling out while trying to climb a hill, that shouldn;t happen...ecspecially in 4 low.. and also..like i said daily driver.. so its gonna be on the road 100 times more than offroad.
