  • Valve train noise? Help! (video)

It's been making this noise ever since I got it running. My mechanic listened to it and said I shouldn't worry, that he's seen many engines like this even brand new make tons of noise.

Part of the noise is coming from the alternator, the rest from something else (I assume valvetrain). I thought maybe injectors but I don't know what they sound like...

Video makes it sound worse than it really is, but it still concerns me.

Ideas? Normal? I haven't had any issues with the engine.

      Uploading now...

Only noises you can hear from my motor is my POS p/s pump... its got like 5k on it and it sounds like chit when you rev it up... And my AC compressor rattles a little bit... NO valve ticking at all.

And that oil cap was f-ing hot... you'll see what I mean. My fingers are red.

Hahha metal oil cap FTL!! :nana: Hell, even my plastic one is too hot to touch.

I'll get a video of my car soon. After replacing the timing chain and dampener, it's so quiet!! I thought I had lifter noise or piston slap, but the noise is gone! It was the chain. The engine sound so quiet for having 200k on it! The loudest noise on mine now is the injectors! I never even noticed them before! haha

PCGUY I hear your injectors in the video, it's the high pitch tink tink sound. Hard to tell if that's what you are hearing or something else? Get a mechanics stethoscope (harbor freight has em cheap like $2) and put it on the injector on the end, and then other places to see what you are hearing.

Jon, yours sounds super deep when you crack the throttle... like wow. Tons of sucking sound. Cone filter and 65mm TB I guess will do that eh? Man a cam makes motors sound nice.

BTW Jon paint that coolant air return line already! Or at least shine it up! haha it sticks out like a sore thumb!! That and your metal trans vacuum line. I'll get a picture of my setup. I didn't paint the vacuum line but it is the 94 style which is routed different so it doesn't stand out so much. I didn't cut mine I just re-bent it to go where I wanted to clear the plenum.

I don't hear anything terrible out of the ordinary so I wouldn't worry. If anything it sounds less noisy than my 3100 did before I replaced the timing chain. I could hear your injectors mainly, and something else just briefly, but it wasn't anything that caught my attention as bad.

x2 on the cam. Normally with a larger cam, youll hear the lifters/rockers much more.

What about the computer showing misfires with a cam? I know on some cam applications, they can actually set a code for Random Cyl Misfire since the computer thinks it's missing. I just checked mine out, I don't get any codes but cyl #6 seems to be missing much much more than anything else?

Misfire count (which I guess resets every few seconds) will be 0-4 for all cylinders, but 6 will show 0-4 sometimes then 18+ others.

Oh and 3400, where did you get that FE3 badge? Stock?

What do you guys use to encode your movies? I see it's in quicktime format but I don't want to install that software with all it's crap it installs with it. I use the QTAlternative...

WMP movie maker has nasty blurry output.... I tried mediacoder but it wouldn't work right at all and kept crashing no matter what I tried.

My video is straight off my camera, I didn't bother to encode it in anything else.

If you have QuickTime Alternative (like I do), the movie should play fine?

If not, close all browsers (IE, firefox, opera, whatever you use) and reinstall it. Some older versions of QuickTime Alternative didn't check to see if your browser was open, and if it is... it can't install it's self into the browser to watch videos.

I can play your video fine. I just need to encode my video from my camera to make it smaller. My camera records it as uncompressed avi jpg. My little video clip of my idling is 200mb!!! 640x480 30fps.

Its been forever since I re-encoded a video file, so I can't remember what I normally use. I've used Adobe Premier before, and I think I've used Nero Recode as well. But the one I used the most is... Not coming to me right now.
