  • Cam Install Questions.

    Well i got this http://www.compperformancegroupstore...ry_Code=16-CAM
I am getting anxious but have never done this before. I know a couple ways but was hoping to get some advice from somebody who had done it? I am gonna try to keep the 3.1 in the cutlass.

I hope you have a manual outline the procedure for removing your cam... in all honesty I'm not sure if you can do it in the car, but if you can, you probably need to lower the engine enough to gain acess through the inner fender.... it just occured to me that this thread might be ancient... not one reply but mine... having said that.... um, I think you have a good project here, and despite your lack of experiance you might be successful if you can follow instructions... do you have a camera? document the job if you do and update us... good luck

Pull the engine.. it will make the install possible. Unless you wanna cut up the body of the car to pull the cam...

Or you can be like me and buy another engine and put a cam in that while its out lol

I actually have that cam and its great but expect a tune as it makes the car run freakin rich. Also you'll need a higher flowing exhaust. I have my setup on w-body.com- http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.ph...c,61277.0.html

Just remember the wires in back of the motor and in front as well. The wire bundle can be pulled though by the water pump. I found it to be easier with the front upper left engine mount removed- AC set aside-

I just did all this about 2 weeks ago so if you need any help just ask.

thanks everybody. I have the manual of every mechanical aspect of the car and they outline removal of the cam out of the car. I have heard of ways to do it in the car we will see. If not what is the best way to lower the motor some?

yeah, we've all talked about this before. you'll have to drop the subframe to get the engine down far enough. i'm not sure if when you tilt the engine down, if the pullys will clear, or if you even need to go that far. i'd try it. save the hassle of unbolting the tranny related stuff.

ok thanks. I know we had talked about it but i couldn't find the thread. How many bolts are on the subframe that need unbolted? do i just need to unbolt the right side or both?

two on each side i think... you'll know to look at the sub-frame and look for bolts!!! anyways... if you do that, you might have to undo the strut mount too to allow that whole deal to lower... i feel strongly though like you'll have clearance by undoing engine mounts and lowering... guess we'll see

I believe that you'll need a hoist to prevent it from crashing down. Bolt wise- I beiieve its 2 front, 2 rear and the 3 nuts on each tower. Just don't lower it too low as I think the steering shaft will separate. Besides this, i would allow some slack for the wiring so you don't have any issues with broken sensor wiring-not cool-.

I would replace the motor mount while you are there wih a solid one. My stock one was broken in half and could have caused a major accident. Also I would replace the Subframe bolts and retainers.

Just my suggestions. Never done it from the bottom, only the top.
