  • 3.1L V6 Turbo

I understand that in 1989 and 1990 they produced the V6 3.1L engine with a turbo upping the horsepower and torque. I have a 93 Cutlass with the 3.1L V6 engine. and althought having a turbo engine would be nice, i simply cant find one, and doing a whole swap with computers and all. its something i dont really want to do. I was wondering if it is at all possible to get some kind of Turbo kit. where i can install a turbo and all the necessary parts to get some extra power. I did at first want to run it all N/A not FI at all. but there isnt a lot to do that, unless i get into heavey engine machining.

So if anyone knows where i can get a turbo kit and add it all on, and have everything work fine, it would be really great and really helpful.

    Thanks!

I'm pretty sure no one makes a bolt on turbo kit. If you want to build your own theres and excellent book called 'Maximum Boost' by Corky Bell that you can find at Barnes and Noble that go's over EVERYTHING you need to know about turbos.

Neither did GM when they made the Turbo Grand Prix, but they made it work.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

Move battery to the trunk, but turbo where the battery and air box used to be. There are lots of custom turbo setups on these fwd 60* motors people have done. Search around for pics.

First you gotta think and capture data on what you want to do. You have to know how it all works and then know how to apply the knowledge you just researched on and make that info better. Once you have it figured out & all written down/stored in a PC or a notebook tablet you then go over all what you just did to make sure it's too the "t" . Don't just aim for one plan, have multiple plans so you don't go over your researched limit ($$$$/time) that you just did twice. If you're sure you have everything squared away, then you begin the physical process using the same method as you did putting it on paper/PC.
That maybe the cheapest route to doing a FI setup, although most people just head in to it speading 2 or 3 times the effort/$$$$ when all they had to do was follow the method. Projects tend to get the best of people, but those who stick with it gain more than if they gave up. It may not have been what you thought it should have turned out to be, but the knowledge and experience is never lost.

XGamesJ6... i do recognize your name from over on the automotive forums... cutlass section where I used to visit a lot... my first question is.. how do you come up with that name?? I wondered that even back when I was on AF... anyway, I wanted to say that I'm positive that the pool of knowledge here will be a great help in your project, and of course i wanted to welcome you.. good luck!

If you want an idea of how to make use of the engine bay real estate, this is how GM did their Turbo GP's(orignally, they had an airbox placed in front of the engine that pulled air from the passenger side of the car)

Ian...about my name, its somethin i made up many years ago, back in the "age" haha. not that long really, but i've just always used it, and never really think much of anything else..not so creative. but anyways, i do have these crazy ideas for my car, and all in all, i think its all just wishful thinking, considering its my first car and all... ive kind of been looking around at other cars out there, what else can i buy, new or old, and get the fun out of it...yet, my car is extremely reliable and has never given me any major trouble, aside from parts that will always need to be replaced. either way, a good form of transportation, at a nice price. and from looks of the picture above, it seems GM had a good idea of what they were doing...in a way, I mean it would be cool to have a rare cutlass with a turbo, and five speed...and still remain to be "bright aqua" We'll see what time turns up i guess. I did get offered a turbo actually for $30.00 he said it was a gerret T25 but im thinking its a T3, really not sure. I'm still looking all this stuff up. and someone else had an exhaust down pipe i would need. but not to sure about the ECM wastegate, and oil/coolant lines, and the engine does have 124,500 miles or so on it, as far as i know its all mainly original, in and out. but there was some sealant i saw on it, so im thinking maybe a gasket job, or possible rebuild....ish. I'm not all to keen on "freshening up" my internals..or going with forged pistons. or even getting a head/head gasket spacer to lower compression.

I guess im just crazy huh, haha

Also i happen to have a better picture of my car,
i did a few tiny mods to the exterior though, mainly i got new fog lights, of course a new side mirror, and marker light on driver side. and thats mainly it. better wipers though..I'll try and scavenge up a few more.
