  • Swap 1995 3100 OBD1 system for a 2006 3500 OBD2?.

What do I need to do to the 1995 Grand Am in order to install a 2006 3500 Engine that came OBD2 I believe?.The Grand am has a shot 3100 in it but the system is OBD1.5 I think?.I am getting a wrecking yard 3500 with ECM.Swapping the Engine and ECM is a given but what about the engine harness or transaxle..should I go with the transaxle that came with the 3500(whatever that is)?.The Transaxle that came in the Grand Am is a T460E or something like that..its a 4 speed I believe. The 3100 has 160 horsepower and like 185 ft lbs of torque. The 3500 has about 200 horsepower and 215 or so lbs of torque I think..thanks for any advice,Joe.

Well first off, isn't the 2006 3500 a VVT engine? If so... this swap won't work unless someone has figured out how to disable the VVT or you manage to somehow get the whole 3500 PCM/wiring harness/etc to work.

    If not VVT...

You will want to keep your current computer and all wiring, however since you can't really tune OBD 1.5 that well (and you will need a tune!) you may be looking at pulling the OBD2 system off a 97+ car (don't do a 96 car, their OBD2 but the PCM is limited).

You will also want to keep your current transmission, it's not the best but getting the tranny that comes with the 3500 to work would be no easy task and I do not believe anyone has attempted it yet.

Aside from that there will be a few mounting issues with the 3500, you will also need an external crank trigger (found here in the store) to run it. You will also want to keep all of your old ignition system (or one off the car you pull OBD2 stuff off of). You may also need all of the various sensors, since the sensors in the 3500 won't work with anything you do.

You will also need to figure out something for exhaust. The old log-style manifolds will work but they are restrictive for the 3500. You can find log-style manifolds off some 05 3400's that have right port sizes for the 3500 but they are not easy to come by. I ended up getting S&S headers since I could not find any proper sized exhaust manifolds.

You will also need a different throttle body since the one on the 3500 is a fly-by-wire setup. Again the store here has the 65mm throttle body that works perfectly.

It isn't an easy task really, there is a ton of info here from when I did mine. http://www.60degreev6.com/showthread.php?t=36647

if you want to swap the wiring harness and pcm from the 06, be prepared to sweap the entire wiring harness for the whole car, all the computers/modules, ect. also swapping a 4t65e in place of your 4t60e isnt that big of a deal if you swapped the whole wiring harness and such, it actualy would bolt in.

LX9 is the engine to get. It's in several years even up to 07 in a buick. Basically you want the one with the box plenum, but not the one that has the box plenum with a "V" taper on the side by the power steering pump. That is the one that has VVT.
