  • Cam install?

I bought a cam off of the store here the other day and Im not able to do it myself. So far I have done all the work on my car but I posess neither the skills or tools to do this. Is there anyone in or somewhat near my area who can do the install? A shop recommendation would be great too if you know of one.

I dont have a hoist to pull the engine with... Nor anywhere to store it if I buy one.

You have to pull the engine? Can't you just drop the cradle on the passenger side and pull the tire? Maybe it's different for the 3400 but I think my friend with a 3800 has done it that way.

Ive heard people suggest trying that with the 3400 but I havent heard of anyone actually doing it that way.

In my opinion, its a pain in the ass to go through the fenderwell. When doing something to this extent, I'd rather have the engine out of the car and have access to everything. And besides, do you really want to spend time in a cramped wheelwell trying to work on engine internals?

If you were closer to Peoria, I would know someone who might be willing to help, but not sure if you'd want to go that far.

its a pain in the ass but you can do it from the top without a hoist..just need a good jack..im not sure if that would work for you tho since its different car which means different engine bay set up but thats they way ive been doing it

Any reputable auto shop can do it. Call them and get quotes, Dont go to a dealer! Any auto shop must poses those tools. It might cost you thouhg

Ive never taken my car anywhere to be serviced besides my own garage or the dealer for warranty stuff. If someone could recommend a shop I would gladly pay someone to put it in for me. Im not going to just walk into a place and hand over the $$ to someone hoping they are honest and do good work. About 6 months ago a friend with a GP broke his flexplate so he purchased an aftermarket one to replace it. He just took it into any random trans shop and had it installed. A month later he went to the track and broke it again. He took his car up to ZZP this time. They opened it up and the guy who installed the previous flex plate replaced it with a stock one and stole the aftermarket one.

Most mechanics will charge at least $500 for a cam swap. Harbor Freight tools is having a sidewalk sale on the weekend of Oct 5th, and have a hoist for $97, and engine stand for $27. I'm going to be grabbing a hoist with at least one stand (probably 2 or 3 at that price). Don't know if they have a store in your area, but I think they may have a site you can order from.
