  • 2.8 in '83 s-10 blazer...hop up's?...

What is available to hop up the "overly underpowered" 2.8. Sorry but the 110 galloping ponies doesn't do much to move it along it's way. I'm in California so if you can give me any smog legal hop up suggestions, that'd be awesome. If it's something that can be easily, or atleast in one night, swapped out to pass smog I can deal with that. I had a '77 Step Side Chevy with a non smog legal carb and intake, so I had to change it every two years just to pass the test, just to come home a change it back...HAHA screw you California Smog Standards! I 've heard that there is a Holly 400cfm 4barrel and intake manifold for this motor. Is this true? If so can someone locate it for me? 400cfm seems like a lot of air for a stock 2.8, and I can almost garuntee it's not smog legal. Oh and by the way, what is up with the intake being part of the heads on this motor? No wonder they are known for blowing head gaskets and mixing the oil and coolant (on second motor in my blazer for this exact reason). Well, don't mean to sound rude at all, I just can't win with my 2.8, HELP ME PLEASE !!!!! -Blazinlow83

I have such a setup. You need the carb distributor. Holley model 8007 - 4 barrel carb, Edelbrock Performance Plus or Torker II intake manifold.

You might want to consider high output heads and/or exhaust upgrade.

    This is a good start.

Dont forget the fageol supercharger kit. It retains the egr and it has a carb legal number. It is made in california. Also you can use a weber carburetor on it or the stock 2gse, I would definately suggest this over the 4 barrel route.

The fageol used with a good carburetor like the weber and a good set of headers will add nearly 65 horsepower and 80 ft lb of tq with 5-6 psi..

Also dont know if the magnacharger or b&m blowers have carb legal numbers but here is a magnacharger with new rotors. It bolts to the stock carburetor manifold if I recall.

thanks a lot for the help 614 and Arns. I'm suprised to see that they make a supercharger for the 2.8. The sad part is that even with e "extra" 65 horse I wouldn't break 200 hp. Also I I don't even think that Magnacharger would even clear my hood, and judging by the looks I'm going to say it's not smog legal...i don't see anywhere for all the intake sensors to go... keep it coming people....even stupid stuff you think i'd know, go ahead and mention it anyways...i'm desperate....also does that tornado intake piece actually make a difference...know what i'm talking about?

The fageol supercharger will clear the hood and its is smog legal.

Intake part of the heads? How so? The engine has the same setup as all other engines do. Only the 3100 and 3400 had the leaky intake manifold problem. This was not due to design it was a problem in the factory. The blocks were not properly degreased before the silicone was applied and the bolts were undertorqued. And I have never herd of any un usual head gasket problems on these engines.

If you want the best bang for the buck (not exactally legal but it WILL pass emissions) do a 3.4L swap. You cannot tell it was ever done unless they inspect the side of the engine or the casting numbers. If you dont want a swap than a Cam and Rocker change is a good option. The supercharger will yield the most ponies but it is getting harder to find them.

If this is an 83, throw that shit away. You want something at least 86 or newer. The older engines are known for all kinds of shit, and the small journal crank is worthless.

The Fageols are available to this day from Fageol , very inexpensive. When you gonna put one on your 3.4 better than you?

I'm with some of the other guys on junking the engine. Get a newer 2.8 or 3.4, one that's fuel injected and get the wiring and computer out of the donor (an S10 donor, you'll have to get the 3.4 from GM or out of a Camaro). Then get a Holley 400 cfm TBI unit, K&N, and do what legal exhaust and cam changes you can. Also, if you're not putting too many high speed miles on it, consider regearing to something like a 3.73 for some off the line speed. Even with mine have 3.73s out back I can still average 19-20 mpg on a trip doing 70-80+.

This spring will be great, $1500 to blow on my truck

Well, if you get the GM 3.4 kit, it is legal for the carb'd guys...

If I were to even bother with an engine swap I would go to a 4.3 v6 out of a newer s-10 or a 350 v8. I don't feel that the 3.4 swap is worth the effort. Specially considering that my 2.8 is a new motor. By the way it was mentioned that the supercharger was inexspensive....well how much is it? I'm glad that gears were mentioned also. I had just thought about that today and was going to mentions that as well. What gears do the tahoe edition 2wd blazers have stock, anyone know? Once again that Tornado intake piece, is it a "piece", or is it worth the 60 or 70 bucks they want?

betterthanyou - you have a '93 2.8, so they probably changed the head and intake design by then. On my 2.8 instead of the heads being one whole piece, it is like 3/4 of the head and the inside wall of the head is part of the intake manifold. I'll get pictures to show this to you as soon as possible. This is what causes the common problem of head gasket leaks on this motor. Every time I mention that I have a 2.8 Blazer, everyone asks if it blew a head gasket yet. A very common problem from what I've gathered.

All of the 60V6 heads are like that. Even the newest versions. So his remark about why they leak is correct. And that has nothing to do with the head gasket. Intake manifold gasket leak, yes. Head gasket leak, no.
