  • 3400 Headers!!

I have an opportunity to buy a set of headers, ceramic coated with flex and high flow cat. Wondering if it's worth the expense. At the moment, my 3400 is stock except for a tune and FFP UD pulley. Future will hold a 3500 UIM and a 65mm TB? I'm keeping the price a secret for now. Want unbiased opinion.

I got a set of S&S headers for 430 with everything you listed above. It was a great deal. Of course, my car is a w-body and the headers were made to fit the w-body. I'm not sure how worthwhile it would be if you had to severely alter the firewall or rear header to make them fit into your vehicle. I don't know much about the other platforms. I've only owned w-body cars.

The S&S headers are not meant to fit a w-body, hell they barely fit in there they rub on the firewall :P

Yeah thats true, they were designed for the N-Bodies(?) I believe (Grand Am, Alero). The only reason they fit in second gen W-Bodies is because they have bigger engine bays. I know for sure S&S headers won't fit into my bay without modification to the front engine mount and the firewall or headers.

I can attest first hand that the S&S headers will not fit into a GEN 1 w-body without a LOT of work. I had to not only modify my firewall, but I also had to modify the rear header to the point that it was nothing more than a glorified manifold.

It was a big waste of time and money. Next time, I will just make them from scratch.

It got to the point that I had to remove them and put stock manifolds back in. The rear header ended up cracking on me because of the poor overall design, and the modifications that I had to do to even get it in there. It lasted almost 2 years, but still. I should have just kept the front header, threw the rear one away, and designed a new rear header from scratch.

WELL......i guess i'll get them then! 450 shipped sounded good to me! eventhough the 3400 manis are better than the gen II's, headers are still superior. i've heard about 15 hp for a stock motor. anyone hear something different? can't wait for future mods!

Ok ok ok. So the S&S headers aren't designed for w-bodies, but they do sell them as Monte Carlo headers and I know that they are the same as the Grand Am headers. They fit a gen 2 w-body just fine. The only modification that needs to be made is the front passenger side engine mount.

The S&S headers are made for the Alero and Grand Am GT, not for the Monte Carlo. The monte carlo is a w-body

3100 MPFI what do you consider a gen 1 w-body? If a 96 Grand Prix is a Gen-1 w-body to you, then they fit fine. They are close and they rub the firewall a bit, but they do fit. When you accelerate and the engine moves, it can only move back which actually gives the headers more room. My only worry was putting it in reverse, if it would clunk however it does not. It may have clunked if I didn't have a solid engine mount to keep things in place, but even a small clunk when you go into reverse isn't bad for having sexy headers.

Not trying to argue, but they may be made for the alero and grand am, but S&S also sells them for the Monte Carlo, which is a w-body. If S&S sells them and markets them for the monte carlo, then you might as well say that they are made for the monte carlo, as well as the alero and grand am.

They do make headers for the Monte, but for the 3800. They don't offer 3400 headers for the monte.

I was just on their site. I just saw it myself.

Notice how it says in bold at the top, "Monte Carlo"? And then further down it shows the picture of the headers? The ones that are on my car. The ones that also fit the alero and grand am. The ones that are also for sale FOR the Monte Carlo.

Humm very interesting... they are in the Monte section, but the only item actually labeled for a Monte in the description is the downpipe/cat/flex.

I wonder if that is an error, or if they decided they fit "good enough" on a wbody to list them... at least under 1 wbody.
