Ok so I am looking at putting a new exhaust on my 97 grand am with a 3100 I was wondering if any one has ever used cherry bombs Extreme Mufflers I am looking at one with a single 2.5 inlet and dual 2.25 outlet I will have a 2.5 down pipe and no cat going in to the muffler and 2 2.25 pipes with 3 in rolled silverlines

Cherrybombs will rasp like crazy...
Personally I love the Flowmaster on 3x00 engines. Look on exhaustsoundclips.com at the 3400, someone has a super 40 and delta 40 posted... sound great.SpudFiles

The flowmaster's do sound great on our engines. I hear the hooker aerochambers are good too and I'm going to try them on my next setup. Straight-through mufflers like magnaflow and glasspacks will always cause a 'raspy' sound (sound of the exhaust valves I think?).1995 Grand Am SE

Hooker Aerochambers sound very good on these engines...
here are a few clips..
mild 3400 with a Aerochamber Crossflow muffler:
dyno vid of a 3" in/out Aerochamber on a not-so-stock 3x00
If you go with a Flowmaster, make sure to get a Delta-flow. the original flow 40's drone bad enough to drive a person insane...
also, here are a few sound clips (you probably gotta be a member to d/l though)

ok, well if your so dead seat on dual outs than run the whole thing dual cause that will seriously cut down on raspyness either way.. obviously were never going to get a grumpy sound over 3 grand with these motor's because it's there nature to rasp.. but you can change the tone of it.. and the more exhast you run the better chance of getting rid of the raspy sound.. so if you can fit 2 2-1/4 pipes thad work towards the sound ur trying to accomplish..
This car has dual 2.5 inch straight sides with headers http://videos.streetfire.net/video/9...500156e11b.htm
This one has 2.5 inch also but aluminum heads a cam, custom intake, headers, and custom mufflers.
This one is a 2.8L iron head with manafold's ,dual 2-1/4 inch , and custom mufflers..(you can sort of hear what it should sound like w/o the rod knock..)
hope this helps abit.. I have more vids of other exparimental exhasts if intrested but like has been said already cherry bombs will sound like garbage and rasp alot.. sick clear of glass packs there a poor design being as fiberglass will hold unburnt fuel untill the pressure is released(de-acceleration) and it will then burn off creating pops, crackles or a full rap..VIDEO Acadian http://videos.streetfire.net/video/8...7f00197eea.htm

Magnaflow does indeed sound good on our engines as that's what I have on my 98 Malibu. I have a 5x8x14" offset in/center out muffler with a dual 3" outlet tip on it. The tip compliments the car very nicely and it sounds really good. Muffler inlet/outlet is 2.25" Here's a video of my car so you can hear yourself.

I think the best cat back, balancing cost, performance, and sound, for a 3100 is a mandrel bent 2.5" catback with a Magnaflow dual-out muffer and your choice of tips (I like 3.5" slash cut tips on both sides personally). Cherry bombs rasp really bad on anything thats not a 300 inch motor or bigger. Thats true with most glasspacks though. Would sound better, flow better, and cost less actually to just go no muffler and throw up some test pipe with some sweet tips.

larger inner preforated tube and a larger case...
IMO Magnaflows sound like poop on these engines, way too garbled. Chambered mufflers is where it's at..

Thrush Glasspacks don't use the louvered core, it's the same preforated style that Magnaflows use. I know the packing is different and core diameter is quite a bit larger but it's still the same concept as a glasspack. sound waves are absorbed into the packing while they travel through the muffler..
in a tuned chambered muffler the sound waves are manipulated to cancel eachother out. That's how the Aerochambers get that badass tone.
Here is a great page i found showing the insides of most popular mufflers...
but everyone is entitled to their own opnion, i've had so many different mufflers and types of exhaust on my car that i've found what i like most and it seems that you have as well.

I can attest to one thing for sure. Performance wise, Flowmasters are the WORST muffler on the market. On my Cutlass, I had offset/offset Aerochambers to start with because I had pipes out the rear. My tires are too wide for those now so I dumped them. I wanted to switch out to offset/center just to get rid of some of the dogleg in the muffler and since I had no Aerochambers in the configuration that I needed, I used some Flowmaster Super 40's and the new Super 44's. I also used a set of Magnaflows as well. The first thing that I noticed was that with either pair of Flowmasters, my throttle response and power was way down. With the Magnaflows, the power and response was there as good if not better than the Aerochambers but they weren't as "tough" sounding to my wife......lol. The Flows were loud as hell INSIDE the car and not as loud OUTSIDE the car as my old Aerochambers were. Very weird indeed!! I ordered me a set of Aerochambers that I needed and will not be putting any other chambered muffler on my car. To put it in perspective, I had raced a friend of mine from a 20 roll and beat him by 5 cars and was still pulling away. When I had the Flowmasters on, I only beat him by 1.5. That is a significant loss of hp. All in all, for max hp, Aerochambers or Magnaflows will get you there. On my 1998 Taurus DOHC 3.0L, I had put on Aerochambers and left the factory resonator on. They were almost stock quiet. So I popped off the resonator and they had the worst rasp/pop I've ever heard. Off they went and on went a pair of Magnaflows. Best sound period.....lol. Mellow when cruising, but loud at WOT. Enough on this matter tho....lol.

Yah, Flowmasters aren't the greatest flowing muffler out there.. LOL
but it all depends on the engine, you can only manipulate the exhaust tone so many ways.. anything sounds good on a cammed SBC but when you get into smaller displacement engines it's hit and miss.
