  • isuzu trooper 2.8 to 3.1

    hi everyone
i just bought an isuzu trooper (very, very cheap) with a bad 2.8. it is my understanding that the engine is made by gm, the only difference being the starter on the driver's side.
my question(s) are: im going to rebuild the engine from the block up, and i've heard that you can stroke the 2.8 with a 3.1 crank and rods. what pistons do i use?? i'm not interested in turbo-ing or anything of that sort. anyone know what years of 3.1 stuff i can use?? i'd also like to put a mild cam in it. which one would give me the best everyday performace without messing up the emissions/computer? (it is a TBI system, with a pre-OBD computer)
thanks in advance for your imput

to make your 2.8l a 3.1l all you need is the 3.1l crank and 3.1l rwd pistons (fwd pistons would be for aluminum head, rwd pistons would be from a 90-92 camaro/firebird 3.1l). the conecting rods are the same in both motors.

there are a lot of cams out there, about the biggest you can go without computer tuning is a comp 260h, although it may not be the best choice if you plan to offroad the thing.

      pistons

where's the best (and cheapest) place to get the pistons? the block's definitely going to have to be bored over, so i can't use standard size out of something else. (not that i would anyway!) does .106" deep recess on the piston head sound right? the 2.8 pistons are flat. i know the 3.1 pistons have to be shorter or recessed (or both) to keep the compression ratio under 9:1, but i just want to be sure.

      thanks for the info

What would be a good choice for off-roading?
