  • Need info.. (3.4 and manual tranny swap)

What are the main differences on a pre 2000 and after 2000 3.4 motor. Everybody seems to agree that a 2000+ 3.4 motor is better?? Why??
I'm planning on upgrading to a new body style (and motor..) from my 92 J-Body 3.1 Gen 2. Body is getting weaker each week and the concrete wall is doing a great job on the unibody!!

Also, planning on maybe using a Grand am with 3.4. Can we convert it to a manual tranny?? Would the transmision from the J-body fit?? What about support and axles?? would the ECM cause me problems if the aut. tranny is gone??

    Thank's...

I may be wrong but I believe the 3400s are the same before and after '00. The 3100s are different as the pre 00 were small port and 00 + up use the 3400 larger valve heads and large port intakes. Since you are swapping models you could also use a 3500 engine with a 3400 UIM to give it the appearance of a stock 3400.

The ECM would need to change with your tranny swap but others will have to chime in on tranny and ECM options.

You will be much happier going to the newer model engines. They breath much better than the 3.1.

Some grand am's used the 2.4 and 5spd. So a 2.2 5spd tranny should bolt right into the same place and use the same axles. The 2.2 trans will bolt to the 3400.
