I would think about using a diesel oil like chevron delo, mobil delvac, or shell rotella for break in if you want to go conventional at first. They are sturdy, can hold lots of crap, and are loaded with additives. 15w40 diesel would be goods over the long run too especially if youre not running cats. Personally I dont think its a problem to go straight to synth. Can manufacturers do it, and Ive always switched to synth before 1000 miles on my cars with no problems (no consumption, etc). I always monitor with oil analysis.

Mobil 1 is inferior ? Please ! Is that why it comes in so many new cars ? Pick a name brand you trust and go by their recommendations for viscosity and feq. of change. I had a Ford 4.6 that blew a head gasket due to wp failure. With over 100,000 miles. The wear was so minimal that I was able to use standard rings, bearings etc. for my rebuild, having changed the oil,oil & air filter every 5000 miles ,of course adding oil when needed.
