Are you talking about the initial break-in period, or after that? If you're going synthetic, do it after the initial breakin period, and some good oils are the Castrols, and Pennzoil Platinum.

i like mobile 1. so did my vettes. and now that i think about it, almost all 'hi-performance' oem applications use mobil 1 from the factory....vipers, mercedes AMG, bmw 'M' cars, corvettes, trans ams, and the list goes on. good sales technique? or good oil? they have a dyno oil thatll work great for your 'break-in' peroid. and then great syn for afterwards. oh and just cause it says clean for 5000....doesnt mean dont change it every 5000!! esp with a suppercharged and modified engine.

So I should use a different oil to break it in.
        What iol to break in??
What oil after the break in.
And how long do I break in a engine.
And really what is the best way to break in a engine.

use any oil that you feel is *good* oil for the break in. NOT synthetic oil for breaking in an engine. Id drive it a good oil change ( 3000 miles ) before switching to sythetic oil. And when you break in an engine, you dont beat the shit out of it. you drive it somewhat easy. as for oil after the break in period I would recommend either royal purple or valvoline sythetic...

Do you need to go through the entire break in process when just changing a cam to a new regrind? Or just some of it? None of it?

I figured maybe a few hundred miles on dino oil, driving "decent" to break in the cam... but I am not sure.

well what ive read and done for breaking in a cam is this:

start and idle car at 2000-3000 rpms. vary the engine speed. this puts the oil pump into full pressure, and starts the lifters in making thier unique wear partern for the cam. once you have done this for about 45 mins, stop the engine, change the oil and filter. start it back up and take a nice 200-500 mile drive. change the oil and filter a second time. now take it easy on the engine for the next 1500 miles. change the oil at the 1500 mark. consider your engine broken in at this point....

lol thats a long fucking break in period! You can get away with just just holding the rpms above idle, like said about 2000-3000RPMS for about 45 minutes then change the oil. After that the assembly lube that you used ( hopfully you did you this ) will be gone and oil will have worked its way through.

The cam is a roller cam, no the cam doesn't need to be broken in as much as a standard flat tappet cam.

There are those that believe you should flog it on initial break in to get the rings to seat better. Run it up in first and then let the engine brake (decel).

You should definetly change the oil/filter often on break in. Right after initial run, then again in 10 miles? or 25. Then 100 more, then 250 more, then 500 miles more, then 1000, then every 3-5 or whatever you wanna do. No synthetic or blend on break in.

Yea I agree with everyone that you should run a conventional oil for your break in.

After that I would suggest Red Line 5W30 Synthetic. It is the best oil on the market period. No one can argue that point. It uses better base stock than any oil sold for gas engines.
It costs about a buck more per qt than Mobil 1.

Mobil 1 = marketing. There is plenty of literature out there from testing analysis, that proves Mobil 1 is an inferior oil, and NOT what as good as it used to be years ago.

Redline is a good oil, but a lot of people agree that it's out performed by German Castrol Syntec 0W-30. The only problem is in finding it.
