  • Fiero HELP!!!

okay... i am sooooo confused... let me just start off by saying i have a pontiac fiero, 86, with the 3.4L engine. the same one in the picture on westcoastfiero.com ..... it looks precisely like the 2.8 original v6, except minus the actual fiero logo on top... where oh where, can i find parts for that engine, besides fierostore.com (which all the parts i ordered, about 5 plus, including a clutch, cables, and other things all broke...)... and number two... what is the engine name... wikipedia says it might be l44, and so does yahoo answers... on this site, someone said it was an l32... and on another forum, the l44 was described as the origninal motor in the fiero.... i cant find performance parts for this thing, and no one knows what engine it is, can someone please help me? that and the fact they havent had oem parts from gm since 91... can anyone find specs for that motor, just above all please help!!! any parts sites that you can find for the engine itself would be great.... thanks. Another Confused Fiero owner... just kidding...

Not sure how you broke all those parts but most of the aftermarket parts stores can supply you with replacement parts. The only time you need to mention that you have a 3.4 in that when ordering a part is when it is for an internal part for the engine that is different in size for the 2.8L. In that case you would order parts for the 93-95 camaro or firebird which is what that engine is out of, unless you have an aluminum oil pan which would indicate it is a front wheel drive engine and a 3400 instead of 3.4.

The parts you mentioned all depend on which transmission you have and the year. If the transmission is a 5 speed you'll need to know if it is the Getrag 5 or the Isuzu because they take different cables and possibly even different clutch parts like the throw out bearing for example. If it's a four speed the 84 takes different cables than the 85-88. The safest thing to do is post pictures since this is obviously an engine swop.

You can also go here and do a search to get the answers to your question since I'm about to head out for the day:

it wasnt offered in the 93-95 camaro.. looks nothing like that engine.... it looks just like the original fiero motor, red top and all. and the parts im looking for are now internal, ive done ignition and alot of bolt on upgrades, but im looking for cam gears, pistons, and other things like that. i have the original 4 spd muncie transmission, and ordered parts from the fiero store of that specification. i have done MANY clutch installations, and the cables are adjustable. The first cable snapped in half at the end from a very very poor weld. it was an aluminum drop weld connected in only one spot, and hollow in the rest. the clutch springs on top of that came out of the clutch, and shot through my trans case which i had to weld shut. the clutch was supposedly for street racing applications, yet my stock clutch looked alot better than it, it had an overall beefier appearence. i know looks dont mean anything, but my stock clutch grabbed better than the other one. the other cable wasnt long enough to reach reverse on the trans, and it was shorter than the other cable they gave us. (wtf is up with that). its definately not a 3400. the parts i ordered were from their phone catalog, and i asked specifically if these parts would fit the stock muncie trans. the engine size is exactly the same, the only mod to swap engines was moving the starter to the oppisite side of the car. like i said its the same 3.4 thats on westcoastfiero.com

Sounds like the 3.4 crate motor perhaps?

Generally, the original Fiero intakes are swapped onto the 3.4. Therefore it doesn't look like the camaro motor, but it can be a camaro motor.

Except for fuel injection the Crate 3.4 or Camaro 3.4 are pretty much the same engine in the same manner that the 2.8 found in the Camaro is the same as the 2.8 found in the Fiero with upper manifold neck angled to clear the distributor. The 2.8L found in the S10 differed by the low performance cylinder heads, other than that everything was interchangeable across the engines and likewise for the the 3.4 engines.

They may have different cams due to the type of fuel delivery.

I'm surprised to hear that kind of problem with the Fiero store. I would have opted for a local retailer which would probably have better prices and in the event of a problem I could take it to their front door to discuss it.

The crate 3.4L is just that... A crate 3.4L. It was originally sold (IIRC) as a direct replacement for the 2.8L and 3.1L engines in the S10/15 trucks. If you want more info on it, I'm pretty sure you can still find the listing for it on any GMPP website.

Chevrolet Performance Parts fuels the passion of automotive enthusiasts by offering crate engines, transmissions, blocks, and parts for project cars.

                A more powerful replacement for your S-truck’s 2.8 V-6!
Your old S-truck has delivered 20 years of faithful service. It’s time to reward it with an upgrade to an all-new, more powerful engine. The HT 3.4 is rated at 160 horsepower and 194 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s an increase of 50 horses and 46 lb.-ft.! And it bolts right into the engine bay. The HT 3.4 rejuvenates your truck with strong low-end torque and mid-range horsepower, giving it increased capability and towing capacity. It is a direct replacement for a 1982–1985 S-truck—S-10, S-15, Blazer and Jimmy—originally equipped with the 2.8L V-6 and automatic transmission. GM Performance Parts delivers the HT 3.4 in a longblock assembly. To complete the engine, you simply swap the necessary parts, such as the intake manifold and carburetor, starter, water pump, from the 2.8L engine. It’s that easy! After all these years, your faithful truck deserves it.

Camaro version 160hp 200Lb/ft probably because of the Fuel injection and likely cam difference between FI and TBI. The crate version may have the drilled and tapped mount for a mechanical fuel pump. I would check between both in the event the crate motor has lower compression pistons compared to the camaro 9.5:1 pistons, the parts are interchangeable across the two versions.

if you are still having trouble with finding out what motor it is, find the casting # and call an engine distributor, they should be able to identify it easyly with that.

You have the L32 3.4 liter pushrod engine. It is the same engine used in the 93-95 F-bodies and is also the same as the GM crate engine. Anything external to the shortblock is Fiero parts that have been bolted on to it. If you want performance internals, you should base your search on a 1993-1995 Camaro/Firebird rather than a Fiero, although most parts are compatible with the 2.8 and 3.1 V6.
