  • 3400 swap, roller rockers w/Flat Cam Question?

Hey this is my first post, as im a new member. Im putting a '01 3400 Topend on my '90 3.1 Turbo Pontiac. The 3400 heads have full roller rockers. What pushrods can i use with the flat cam and roller rocker heads? These heads were originally used with roller lifters and roller cam. Obviously i have to use flat lifters but will stock 3.1 pushrods work with the roller rockers? I just got my motor back from the machine shop and this is the only thing holding me back now. Any help greatly appreciated . Thanks!

If they are the stock rockers they are roller fulcrum only, full rollers also have roller tips.

You will need to get a pushrod length ch3ecker and measure it for yourself, it seems that no two builds are the same and best to measure for each build.

Then order custom pushrods, from any major cam supplier.

Well, i have '99 3400 heads and 01 3100 heads (which im using) and they both have the same rockers that seem to be full roller setup. I dont think they are rolller fulcrum tip rockers like you say. Can i measure the 3100 pushrod and add the additional height of roller lifter? Would that be the right idea ? Any help would be great.

No, roller fulcrum, meaning roller bearing type deal only at the pivot point. "Full roller" has a roller tip as well, like the Crane Gold race rockers.

No, you can't just add the difference in lifter hight to the pushrod, due to the pushrods being on angles, and not directly in line with the lifters. You need a pushrod length checker to measure this length correctly.

Yes you can keep the timing set, infact you will have to, since that is determined by the cam used, genI/II uses 3 bolts to attach the cam sprocket to teh cam and no retainer on the cam. GenIII uses a single large bolt to attach the cam sprocket and a cam retainer plate.

The belt system can also be retained, but you will need to use a genIII power steering pump, to clear the genIII intake. You will have to use the genIII front cover to have the proper off set for the genIII power steering pulley to be aligned with the reast of the belt system.

you need to use a gen3 timing cover OR have the gen2 cover milled down for the gen 3 power steering pump since they are different diameters. For use with the gen 3 LIM you need to use the gen3 PS pump.

if you get the pushrods from crane, they won't be very good tolerance to your spec.
