  • pistons + cams

it apears as though im going to stick with my '88 2.8 corsy engine.

however, i would like to know a few thing first
    1. trying to find some not so dished or flat pistons
    -how flat is ok?

    2. looking at either Crower 03002 Mileage Beast, or the solid 03065 Compu-Pro would like to get the later but the .207 difference from stock lift seems like an awful lot.
-would that lift cause any known problems, and would i need new springs and such?

    3. head milling
-how far can i go w/o causing ping? looking for at least a 9.5 CR.

    thanks alot.

You can always use a 3.1 crank and pistons in your block to get a 3.1.

Before you spend a lot of money on a cam, call Delta Camshafts. They gave me a copy of the 260h grind for $100 including lifters.

so if i go .040 over on my '88 2.8 block and get .040 over 3.1 pistons for, say a 92 lumina they will slip in no problem, as in same deck hieght? the 3.1 has the wrist pins in higher right?
btw: what would that bring my compression to?

Overboring will raise compression slightly if the same size dish is used, check out the compression calculator on this site. I have a set of Keith Black hypereutectic 3.1 pistons I can sell you, but they are only .030 over.

thanks for the offer but i can get a good deal on some .040's from work with the stock dish.
ya i checked out that compression calculator and by using the 3.1 pistons i will be at 9.78:1.

what vehicle do you recomend getting the pistons and crank for/from?

do you know a good place to find thinner gaskets?

          thanx for he delta info.

one more thing: is there a way to tell for sure if i have aluminum heads, cuz they sure don't look like it.

Look at the difference in intakes, also note the iron heads will ahve rust. Another way is to scratch it with a knife and you can feel the difference between aluminum and steel.

on those first two pics you have what side of the heads are facing the camera?
its not really rusty but because of the leaky valve cover gasket its just covered with oil.
also on that 3rd pic, is that sensor that is sticking out just above and to the left of the far left exhaust port on the cast iron head in the same spot on the aluminium?

according to domesticcrew.com if it says MPFI on the intake then it's aluminum so i guess it has to be.

The 2.8 RWD iron heads say "2.8 MPFI" on them.

Look where the lower manifold mmets the heads, and also the angle of the covers.

My al heads have four bolts in the valve covers, the iron heads have 6 (one on each end as well).

Where's all the confusion coming from? It's an '88 Corsica, it has Aluminium heads. It's also a genII design.

ok should have thought of this a while ago, i just stuck a magnet to one of my heads and it didn't stick where as it did stick on the heads from the 3.1.

newayz, back to my original q's.

what car should i get the pistons and crank from?

so a '90 lumina would work right ?

and what about milling the heads?
