  • Free 3.4 DOHC. Should I swap to my 3.1

I've done some seaching on here and there seems to be alot of info about swapping this and that here and there. So I'm looking for a straight answer.

    I have a 91 z24. 100k on it.
Someone told me I could swap this( I don't see how) Maybe he was confused about a 3400 intake swap instead.
In the lot next to me, the fire dept does pratice cuts on junk cars. I know the owner of the cars. He doesn't care about me pulling parts. There is a 3.4 DOHC car out there ready to be cut up.

Is it worth doing all that swapping?
I was just going to swap a 3.1 camaro intake
Any write ups on the 3.4 swap (gotta be)
What gains should I get from this?

    Thanks for the help.

uh..... i think you're a little confused. The 3.4 DOHC, 3.1/3.4 RWD(camaro), and 3400(FWD) are all very different motors.

The 3.4DOHC nothing swaps over to the 3.1 in your Z. it'd bolt up, but you'd have to make some way to run the cams, and it's not worth that kind of effort over just swapping in the whole 3.4DOHC. That said, the DOHC motor is WAYWAYWAY too big for a J-body engine bay. there's pics around and....well it just doesn't work.

the 3.1 and/or 3.4 RWD(camaro) intake doesn't bolt up at all. That's an iron head motor. You'd need the entire top end. it's been done, but in stock form, it's a downgrade from the aluminum 3.1 top end you have now. which is saying something

If you're gonna do any swapping at all, get the 3400 top end from a newer FWD car, or a 2000+ 3100 top end(it's the same as the 3400 top end but with 3100 instead of 3400 written on it.) OR just the whole 3x00. That'll get you the best bang for the buck. And it's fairly easy. in a J-body it just bolts in with a new front engine-to-mount bracket, which you can make, or buy.

That's what I thought. I'm looking at a 2000 top end now. Do I need the 2000heads? Won't the 2000+ lower intake ports be bigger than my 91 heads ports?

you'll need the 2000+ heads, upper and lower intakes, a genIII PS pump, your stock alternator, and a 92-94 V6 coolant tank. those are the real major things i can think of now. Plus the rad hoses and mount bracket. it's all over at www.domesticcrew.com

SO I can't just swap the intake then. What gains would I see from that swap?

Well, stock the 3.1 is rated at 140hp, a newer 3100 is rated at about 170-175hp, so anywhere from 20-40hp/tq. Maybe more because that 3.1 is a little worn out, and people are dynoing 180-190hp on stockish 3400 5 speed swaps, and that's what they're rated at in newer cars(at the flywheel)
