  • 96 Camaro w/3.1

Hey friend of mine has a 96 camaro with i think the Gen 1 3.1L engine. Can i put a ls1 into it and are there instructions? As well if that doesnt work what engine would be my next best bet for performance as well as any suspension, braking, computer, and engine things i'd have to update.

3.4, 3.1 ended in the fbody in 92 iirc.

If you don't want a V6 (specifically a 60*) then you are asking in the wrong place .

3.1 ended in 92, and I'm pretty sure the 3.4 was only 93-95. So did they goto the 3.8 in 96 as the base engine?

3.4 was offered part of the 95 model year. The early ones came with 3.4's the later production cars had the 3.8l V6.

I agree the 3.4 and 3800L were both 95 options. If this is indeed a 96 Camaro it has the 3800

However to the original poster. You can stuff ANYTHING into a Camaro but it all depends on money. FYI an LS2 can be had for the same money but makes more power in base form and is recieving more aftermarket support. And lets not forget the bigger bore. So tell your buddy to get his cash out. There are lots of parts that need to be swapped to change to a V8. He should try and find a donor car to make the change.

i dont believe it was a 3800 or a 3400 he said it was a 3100 but i'm not sure i never got a look at it. He wants good power from it and he seems to think a ls2 is the only good power option. I think any of the GM cars can fit an ls2 just depends on the cash and knowledge you have. Do you guys have any sites or info if he were to say swap in a newer 3500 or 3800 in and what he'd need to do this such as computer programming, transmission, mounts, and even suspension upgrades. Thanks

Sadly I have never seen a 3500 Camaro yet. 3800 would not be very hard. All you need to do is find a 3800 Camaro Donor and steal the required parts to make the swap happen.

I know what i need for the malibu would the swap be similar? Or are the mounting in the camaro different from mine? I mean technically the malibu had an updated camaro engine.

Uh, I wouldn't really say that. Sure, they are in the same engine family, but they are far from just an "updated" engine. That's like calling the LS1 just an updated 350.

the 92 3.1 had no relation in design to the 2000+ 3.1?

That's as ignorant as saying Z28's and WS6's have "vette motors"
'93 Sunbird. 5spd, 3.1, it's fast. Oh, and 240k miles has proven lethal against Turbo Talons

I'm lurking occasionaly. It's tough because I'm usually too busy with the Army or my 5.0 Mustang. Which is for sale.

The FWD and RWD motors are quite different from one another, even within the same year (ie, the 3.1 in a 92 Firebird and the 3.1 in a 92 Lumina). When the 3x00s came out in 93, they became quite different than their FWD counterparts, due to advances in design.

Do they have relation in design? Yes. But that doesn't mean things will work the same...

i just figured they were mounted differently and had a different section to go to the transmission i know very little about rear wheel drive then again ive never owned a rear wheel drive car. I figured other than that certain section going to transmission everything was the same. So basically i have no idea how the camaro works lol. So any sites would be appreciated i guess i need to know the whole rwd setup anyway.
