  • heavy duty starter ?????

hey guys i tried to kick the new motor over today with the stock starter,
well 12.7-1 proves to much for a stock starter, it turns over but not fast enough to start.

anyone know of an heavy dudty starter for the rwd 60* motors?

sbc starter wouldnt fit would it?

try more power first. then a new starter. if you want to push the envolope, try starting fluid

12.7-1 is the cr of the motor so id rather not use starting fluid lol,and thats not the problem i need the motor to turn 200 rpms for megasquirt to work

the megasquirt will work at cranking speeds under 200rpm, but anything under 200rpm isnt going to get it turning fast enough for it to fire anyways.

i would say a late model 3400 starter, however thats not going to bolt onto your motor. you may need to look into a smallblock starter, there is a ton of aftermarket options out there.

Is this with the ignition system active, or just the engine itself with no igintion and just the plugs in?

If this is with the ignition system active, try truing the engine over first and then turning the ignition on, many race cars start that way.

bump your voltage to 24V and see how long the starter lasts. the stock starters are huge beasts and should take the heat generated OK. it would be more the commutator/brushes and insulation ratings i'd be worried about on the windings.

BUT i do know some guys who do this for racing and one guy had a starter last him 10 years.
            got zap-straps?

good thought on snapping the ignition on once the motor is rolling, i almost forgot that one. i know on the alcohol dragsters if the ignition is on when you start cranking the motor will jump back and throw the starter off the front of the motor and try to wrap you up in the cables (seen it happen before).

another trick i know is the msd start retard box. however in this case (are you running dis or 8 pin hei???) the ignition module controlls its base timing for startup till 5 volts is applied to it, so retarding the timing on start up isnt much of an option, unless you give the distributor a twist (say, 5 degrees btdc)

I dont know what the temprature is where you live, but Ethanol wont vaporize when the temp is under like 65 *F or something like that. If that's what you're running on, I'd try setting up some sort of small system that will inject gasoline into it to get it to start.
