  • Few q's rebuilding my 3400

Hey all. Well I just got done tearing apart my 3400 b/c of a major failure. The block, the crank, pistons, and rods are all good. The Cam is broken in half, I had a bent rod, and warped heads. Now I have been talking to someone, that said you can swap the 3800 heads on to the 3400 to make some more power. Which heads are these the cast iron head from the early gen or the late model aluminum heads. If anyone could get me part numbers that would be cool. Also I haven't looked at cams but I figured I would put a hotter cam then stock in, but hopefully I will not have burn a new eeprom for it. If anyone has p/n of cams that worked with the computer or cams that required just some tuning rather then a whole new eprom that would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

3800 heads wont bolt up at all, IIRC, and also, there aren't any stock alum 3800 heads i think, i'm pretty sure they are all iron headed boat motors.....

And if you want a Cam you'll have to buy one from the store here, or buy the solid core stock replacement from the store and have your own regrind done. You could use a stock hollow cam, but since yours is broken you might as well get the solid one, and plus, a lot of companies wont regrind the hollow pressed-on lobe cams....

LOL, yeah that info is totally wrong. 3800 is a 90* motor and they are all iron head. No where close to being able to bolt up.

You could bolt on 3500 heads and LIM and plenum (or use 3400 plenum) for more power however. A mild cam should be ok with an un-tuned ECM. A radical one however would likely cause drive ability issues.

        Fixed.

3500 heads (and intake) would provide an improvement in flow and overall potenial power created.

What year/model of car is this in as well? If it's anything '96 or newer you wouldn't have to burn an eeprom because they don't have them. They are obd2 and uses flash re-write pcms. You could get a tuner or have someone else with one custom tune yours for you. A mild cam would probably run alright on a stock program, but far from optimum. I'd recommend at least some tuning.

As already stated 3500 heads/manifolds will increase flow and give a decent power gain. Even a mild reground cam is going to require stiffer valve springs and custom pushrods though so keep that in mind when adding up costs. The different flow characteristics of the 3500 parts will change the volumetric efficiency of the engine as well, so again you're back to some tuning to get the best power/gas milage out of it.

Alright well it looks like I'll be heading to the scrap yard and pulling all the 3500 stuff I need. Gotta love junkyard connections. I know for a fact there is a 3500 complete in the yard so I'll go grab everything I need. I think I'm just going to get the stock solid replacement cam for now, and I'll get it reground if I feel like I need more power. The main goal is to get this car back on the road for my g/f.
