  • 1990 beretta pace car intake

i was reading part of an old gm press release for the beretta pace car from 1990...that thing was a 3.4 with over 225 hp....used a modified L98 tpi upper intake ...highly modified of course.....anyone ever tried to replicate the results seen using more modern parts?...just curious guys but this seems like a decent idea.....we got any good machinsts in here who might want to give it a shot....my guy is a chickenshit and wont even look at it

Well it would be unique but a 3500 or 3400 intake would be better

looks kinda like a 3500 plenum...

even back then they knew how to make power, too bad it never made it into production.

it a modified V8 plenum mated to the 3100 lower intake.....seen different hp numbers....225 to 245......thats a bit more than even the 3500...shouldnt be that hard to reverse engineer....and they used 3100 parts we have the 3500 ones to work with today....makes me wonder what we can get out of the 3.4

How did they use 3100 parts when they didn't even come out for 4 more years?

IIRC that engine was all gen2 parts.

In this same year the turbo engine was coming to a close, Chevrolet made a pace car out of the Beretta. This car of course had to be special and so did the engine. The traditional cast iron block was first tossed in favor of GM's high performance V6/60-degree aluminum bow tie block. With the block punched out to 3.4 liters, a compression ratio of 10.7:1 and filled with GM and aftermarket goodies, like a Crower solid lifter camshaft with .459-inch max intake lift and .484-inch exhaust lift, Iskenderian solid lifters, custom-made Smith Brothers pushrods, Crane aluminum roller rocker arms, special studs from Ryan Falconer Racing Engines, the engine produced 225 horsepower. With this power the car was projected to 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds and was able to cover a quarter mile in 14.5 seconds. Still Chevrolet could not get enough of the little engine that could, it was time for some innovation, all engines thus far have been pushrod engines but Chevrolet was not done with their little creation.

            And its not a modified V8 plenum mated to a V6 lower... its a custom box-type plenum with a LT1 (??) TB.

While I hadn't thought about the 'Retta pace car, I have a design of intake in mind that turns out to be quite similar, at least from teh pics I have seen.

I may build it, I may not, or I may buiold it, but not for a while, until I find a chassis capable of utilizing the power of the engine I want to build.

chill guys -- he doesnt know the full 60* line so he isnt aware of the differences between the 3.1/3100/genI/genII/genIII/etc.

lots of the fbody guys (he is one of them) dont know the FWD world and therefore think that the 2.8/3.1/3.4 motors only came in the fbody (i know - i was one of these guys at one point in time).

so give him a little bit of a break, hes trying to help me come up with something. as for using the 3500 plenum on the fbody - ben measured the 3500 and its about a half inch taller than the 3400 plenum, and that BARELY (without the 3400 SFI on top) fits under the cowl in the fbody. so thats why its not an option.

we are just trying to come up with something that'll work better for us fbody guys and look pretty cool to boot when the hood gets opened.

                    thx.

Sucks about the 3500 plenum not fitting an fbody. But I'd say it's design is close as it gets to the pace car custom plenum from a stock part. Even looks similar. I'd say the custom one though is a little bigger volume wise.

yea - probably. it would be awesome if we could use the 3500 cause it would work better for the LT1 TB we are trying to use.

the thing we are both wondering on the Beretta intake is - how did they get it to attach. i mean, what exactly does it look like under that nifty black cover. if we could find that out we could possibly get one made (or two).

just would be nice to know how they accomplished that. its obvious that they fuel is on the sides, not under the plenum like on the 3400 (because the fuel rail they used is from a buick, and the injectors go around the outside (if you look carefully at the pic you can see the silver color of the fuel rail around the perimeter of the intake)

might have to go that route to gain some extra beef in the middle for the TB.

I don't think the plenum had a cover on it... Look at this image from this website. Sure does look like a lot of plenum volume!! Probably bolts go through it from the top... I'm not sure what material it's made of, it may be a polymer and that's why it's black..
