My stock '90 Grand Prix SE 5spd had limited slip. That thing lit my 245 16's up super nice. Which 5spd tranny did it use? (dont mean to hijack, sorry)'93 Sunbird. 5spd, 3.1, it's fast. Oh, and 240k miles has proven lethal against Turbo Talons
I'm lurking occasionaly. It's tough because I'm usually too busy with the Army or my 5.0 Mustang. Which is for sale.

Jon, not sure if it's a shaft or what, my terminology is likely off, and It's been years since I was reading that stuff. But whatever it was they tried making one with roller bearings in it, so it wouldn't seize with 1-wheel-burnouts but there wasn't enough room to have the bearings and have the part thick/strong so it came apart...sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

hrmm well the only part I can think of would be the final drive output shaft, it goes from the last set of gears on the trans end into the sun gear that drives the diff... but, that would spin at the same speed 1 wheel or 2 wheel burnouts... so it might not be it.
All I do know is when that tube comes off for the diff lubrication the two bearings(non roller) will heat up enough on the final drive shaft and cook to it and then break free from their location and spin... this is the inital cause of diff failure because now bearing material is being spread through the trans.

the shaft you are reffwering to is called the diff pin (shown in the 2nd pic in 3400_95_modified's post). the spider gear ride on this pin. with a lack of lube, they seize to the pin, the pin break the retaining pin off and is free to slide out of the diff. putting bearing on it may help this, but i can see the complications of doing so. best bet still is to run a true limited slip.

Well then that pin is (obviously) present on all and every diff'ed car... fwd or rwd... so thats not a problem thats specific to fwd, thats just a limitation on the function of the diff.
Bottom line, a Open diff is not ment to do 1 wheel burnouts. So the statement stands, the only way to prevent the issue is a true LSD
