  • 3400 Build

Ok so im pretty new here, my name is Kenny, and I have a 1996 Olds Cutlass 2 door which has the 3100. Recently, I aquired a 3400 out of a 2002 Alero I plan to build the shit out of this motor. When I go back to school next quarter, I will have the opportunity to regrind both heads, and during that time, I will be doing a 5 angle valve job and while the heads are disassembled, I would like to install the LS6 springs (opinions?) and suitable seats. My question is what all do I need to install these springs? I also have my eyes on the crane 272 cam, and feel the motor should have pretty decent rockers on it that wont need changed. About the 272 cam though? what are all of your opinions on this cam, and will it even work in a 3400? I will be doing my own P&P work to the heads and manifolds, and I just seek the guidance of people who have done this build, all help is appreciated in advance. Thanks.

And btw this motor will not stay N/A forever, boost is in the mix.

the 272 will work for the 3400, but its not a roller cam. you need to swap to gen 2 lifters and get custom pushrods

Do a 3500 top end swap, the 3500 top end flows as good as a ported 3400 top end. LS6 springs are a good bet. You'll need different seats for them to fit. Some 1.6 ratio rockers would go nice, preferably full roller.
As for the cam, since you will be going to boost, maybe your best bet is to get a custom regrind on your cam. That way you can get proper specs for a boosted engine. Possibly an offset grind to increase your LSA and open your intake valve later, so you'll have less overlap.

Midnight, 272 wont work in a Gen3 block, especially if his computer is a 96 (SFI).

If you want cam, get a sealed power cam (solid not hollow like oem) and have it re-ground.
