  • The Fiero Store Performance Engine Kit

I've got a question for the board. I was looking at the Fiero Store's Performance Engine Kit and I was wondering why can't I use it in a '86 Camaro 2.8L? I contacted them and they said that it was specifically for Fieros. Isn't a 60 degree V6 ironhead the same as an other 60 degree V6 ironhead? The kit comes with 9.5 to 1 pistons, a Crane 2030 cam, gasket set, high performance oil pump, timing chain, etc. Wouldn't this kit work on my Camaro block? I'm in the middle of a MGB/V6 conversion and I want to get the most bang for the buck out of this little engine and still be smog legal here in California. Can someone steer me the right way?

BTW a rough guess how much HP this would make? Also performance chip in the ecm

2.8's all have the same block but not necessarily the same heads. The Fiero had the High Output cast iron head. If you check Fiero.nl and search Oreif and Master Tuner Akimoto, you will see alot of good information.

I suspect that most of their kit works well on a Camaro engine (they were all Chev built) but the cam is a different story. You need to research that one a bit.

If I was doing your mod, I'd be looking for the same block in a better output, like the 3.4 Olds, or 3.8 Pontiac, or even the 3800SC.

My vote would be the 3.4 Olds. It red lines at 6500 rpm stock and is 170 hp 205ft/lbs

3.4 olds? 60V6 is chevy, not olds.

I would use a better cam for sure. If you want to keep the 2.8 heads and intake, at least go with the 3.4 camaro intake and switch to DIS. That would be how I would do it. Otherwise, i don't really think the iron heads are a good choice for any NA build up, gen 3 all the way.

So, all 60* v6's are made at the Chevy engine plant? I didn't know that. Of course don't tell the rest of the Olds owners. The Olds version is 170 hp and 205 ft/lbs. Is there another 3.4 with the same specs?

The 2.8 heads(all Chevy of course), even the high output ones are really limiting. The intake is worse. I went to the Edelbrock intake myself, but I am limiting my hp by keeping the iron heads. A little less hp, but I don't want to mod any more than that.

Before spending alot on the 2.8, I would still look for a larger brother to transplant.

What 3.4 are you talking about with 170? The 3400 in grand ams and aleros and minivans? Its 185 hp in the minivan I think. Yes, its a chevy engine.

I too would go with a 3400 to start with. Starter placement may be an issue though if you start with a FWD block in a RWD application.

I'll put my in my 2 cents to say that the starter placement on a FWD engine hasn't been a problem at all on my MGB conversion.

Ok cool, i know it is for the F body owners but wasn't sure if that was the chassis or transmission or what. I dont have one so I just go by why gets brought up here.

Alero is a 3400, same engine used in a few other vehicles.

Right, They just build different specs for different models.

By the way, to relieve any misconceptions for the readers, 3.4 litres = 3400 cc's.

That is the reason we have been talking about a 3.4 vs 3400.

It was the same way for the 2.8. I believe it was 115 for s10's, 125 for cavaliers, 140 for the 85 Fiero, 135 for the 86 Fiero, and on and on.
