  • 3.4 in a Celebrity

I have a gen1 2.8 FI in my 86 Celebrity coupe and I want to get more power out of the car, my goal is 180-200 hp with good low and mid power. My plan is to use a 3.4 from a 93-95 camaro and drill the starter holes on the other side, and also use my current intake components with the 3.4 injectors. I would also do the usual stuff like double roller chain, roller rockers and cam but I'm not sure what cam will work well for a driver? Is this even a good way to go? Should I just use a 3400 from a Venture van? If so, is it at all possible to use my original harness (wiring is not my thing but I can deal with changing some connector ends)?
Any thoughts or comments would be great!
    Thanks, Andy

the camaro 3.4l has the engine mount lugs in a different spot , so custom mounts would be needed. the starter is another issue, easily overcome. dropping this motor in with a cam and a few goodies may net you 170hp, nothing to big.

the 3400 would pretty much bolt right in. you will be able to use your stock harness but would require computer tuning for it to run (distributor to dis requires some changes in the tuning). what i would do is find an 87 or newer car with the 2.8l aluminum head engine and grab the wiring harness/ecm out of it, it would likley plug in with minimal effort and would be easy to modify for the 3400. what you would need to modify would be for a 3 wire coolant temp sensor and may have to lengthen some wires.

a 3400 will get you 180hp stock, throw a cam in and some 1.6:1 rockers and itll be good for a bit more.

1.6 rockers are stock for all 3x00 engines.

I would definately go with the 3400 (from any minivan 97+ or several cars 2000+). And don't use any of your existing parts from the 2.8 if you want close to 200hp. They are too restrictive.

For a drop-in replacement, the 3.4 would be easier. Custom mounts are not needed, since the Celebrity doesn't use the engine mount lugs on the side of the block. The 3400, however, does require a custom front mount, as the cast oil pan interferes with this front mount.

The 3400 has more power potential, but will require more work to swap.

I guess the big question is how big is your budget?

Thanks for all the input, it helps a great deal! If I did a 3.4 I was planning on a full rebuild because of the age, so I guess a 3400 swap might actually be cheaper. Locating a 3400 around here will be easy and I can get an '87 harness and computer no problem. I think the early W cars use the same front mount, so could I use a mount from a 94-95 GP 3100? Now that I think about it, the 94-96 A cars had a 3100 so maybe I could use that mount and even the wire harness, making it pretty much a bolt-in. I plan to use a 282 five speed, will that make tuning easier?
            Thanks

Just have to say I agree that the 3400 would be the best way to go, you'll get 190 to 200 HP out of the box, and just over 210 ft/lbs of torque, all in stock trim.

The genII 2.8/3.1 harness can be easily used, and that would simplify the DIS swap over.

I've seen mostly stock 3400's in Jbodies (intake and decent exhaust) dyno at 197 HP @ the wheels. that's no internal mods at all.

toss a cam in a 3400 with some port work and you'll have one fast car... Of course then you'll have to worry about how strong that '86 tranny of yours is.

Hey Euro, Welcome to the group! Congrats on the find, coupe's are really rare. I am half heartedly looking for an '86 coupe so I can build a Celeb RS clone (try to find a pic of that!!). I already have the VR body kit and when I build, I plan on using a v16 quad turbo engine.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

I'm not too worried about the tranny, I have a 282 and all related parts from a Beretta and it looks like I can use every thing in my car with little modification (the cables however are about "6 too short compared to the Celeb 4-speed cables I have).

I actually have seen a pic of that car before, very cool! I've been looking VR parts for years and found nothing so far, just a couple complete cars that I didn't have money for. I would probably walk on hot coals for VR parts at this point, lol! Anyway, that sounds like a good build, good luck on it

Why again did they stop producing this body kit?

Good find '88GTU!! The RS was just a one off prototype that led up to the VR (same kit, just different fog light openings). I think part of the limited production was do to the fact that it wasnt very heavily advertised and, after dealer mark up's and everything else, they were quite expensive. A good VR site is: eurosportVR.com Also, '86euro, you may want to wander over to yahell (yahoo) groups and look up "rarefwdgmabody". If you join, let rarecarvr know I sent ya, it'll make the process easier. Speaking of rarecarvr, he currently owns approx. 20 VR's, 2 or 3 Pont. 6k AWD's, and many others.

I'm koval81 on that site, but have never posted. My brother has been a member for years, he told me about rarecarvr, I'm way jealous. Rarecarvr never has stuff for sale, does he? I can understand why if not.
