  • My Crane 272 EDIT: Lifter Question also

So I just bought a new Crane 272 with the Crane valve springs off ebay for a $100 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWN%3AIT

Ive looked at the specs on the springs, 105# at 1.700" 296# at 1.200" and a max lift of 0.547" He says in the auction that I'll need the retainers specific to the springs, but I cant find them anywhere. Heres a link to the springs on crane's site: http://www.cranecams.com/?show=brows...rtNumber=99848 He does say that Summit has them, but I cant even find the retainers on Crane's site. I dont know if anyone has dealt with these springs, but if you have, lemme know about the retainers and locks. Im going to assume I would use stock shims. TIA

I dont know what springs you have that require special retainers. I run a 272 cam and z-28 Springs up to .520 lift that have the proper seat pressure for the 272 cam. You can buy these springs for under $25.

What is the diameter of these springs you bought????/

The outer diameter of them is 1.255. And the innter is .870. Its a single spring with a damper. Check out the link in my first post. Im just quoting what the guy said in the auction. Im wondering if its true or not

You need different retainers because of the install height. The GM crate motor retainers will work for you.

Yeah, checking out the springs those retainers are made for, those are the ones. Thanks man, I appreciate it. I didnt realize the Crane springs were same as the GMPP 3.4 springs.

Um I think they have slightly different seat and open specs.. But cannot remember. I am using the retainer on my truck and I was very impressed with them. They are quite heavy duty.

Gm retainer 12363216 will work as betterthanyou has said. Crane also have a retainer that will work with the 99848 spring. Unfortunately Crane have redone their web-site and there isn't quite enough info remaining on retainers, so you will have to call them to get a part numer.

The important thing is to use a retainer and/or keeper combination that lets you set the installed height of the spring at 1.7"

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I just couldnt find any info on crane's site because of thier redesign. So, I got the retainers picked out, shouldnt stock keepers from a 3.1L work?

Alright, heres the lifter question: I think its a good idea to get the Crane lifters with the 272. Anyone know if stock are just as good? Either way, I'm getting new ones. I just wondering if its worth the $$$ to get the Crane lifters

Um Cranes are probably the same. I've never had a problem with GM lifters.

Yes your stock valve stem locks will work with the GM retainers.
