  • 3400 timing chain with Stage1 cam and LS6

Title kind of asks the question... Has anyone had a problem with the stock 3400 timing chain on a stage 1 cam or even stage 2 with the LS6 valve springs? I know the chain is significantly narrower than its 3100 counterpart, so I was curious if it would still be able to hold up to the valve train changes. Or should I think of running the 95 3100 chain setup that appears to be of heavier duty.

Yeah but I dont think that fits under a stock timing cover, I think you need to clearance the block or even the timing cover to fit it.

That is what I am dealing with now for the double roller. Id rather make it work than use a single chain unless its just not possible.

Yes but then don't you also have to set up the cam to use a button and remove the thrust shield behind the gear? I was reading up on this and I was trying to figure out my best option for a daily driver... I hate to have to take the cover off 6 months from now because the chain is shot... it's not the easiest job to do in a beretta.

I guess I'll start with a stock timing chain then and go from there and see what happens.

When I installed my stage1 boost cam and LS6 springs I replaced the chain and damper with another stock set. The one that came off the engine had about 50K miles on it with both stock springs and LS1 springs (only slightly stiffer) and it was noticably stretched out compared to the new one. No other sign of wear though on the chain or sprockets. It's got less than 3k on the new cam so I haven't looked at it again yet.

I've heard that the double roller won't fit without machining the cover and I haven't heard of anyone actually doing it yet. I've actually heard a few people claim the double roller isn't any stronger than a thicker single though (don't know if it's true though). I hadn't heard that the '95 3100 came with a thicker chain though. Anyone else have any info on that? Will it fit without modification, what parts are needed, etc? Otherwise, I haven't seen anything on any site saying that anyone's found anything better than the stock chain yet.

i dont think the double roller fits the gen 3 as it is only made for the gen 2 3 bolt camshaft. this along with removing the thrust plate is the other issue i believe. the crank gear for the double roller however fits the crank no problem.

if someone can get the gear to fit a single bolt gen 3 cam, the clearancing of the timing chain housing is the least of my worries.!

well if you were to get a custom cam, you could just ask the company to make the 3 bolt pattern instead of the single bolt, so then it would work, just clearance the cover and check for interference in the thrust plate. if its just the bolts that are in the way, use a fastener with a diff head
