  • my new turbo!

so i finally decided to ditch my little Garrett T25. i know i should upgrade to 3x00 topend but what the hell...

it's a PT67 DBB. HKS calls it the T04Z. It's from Precision and they call it a PT6776RE. Sometimes people call them a T67 or T04R when they're not dual ball bearing. It's a Garrett dual ball bearing center housing with a T04E compressor cover (3" in 2" out) over a T67/T04R compressor. The turbine side uses a P trim T4 turbine in a 0.68 a/r tangential housing (T4 inlet and 3" v-band outlet).

should wake up the 3.1 a little huh?

I'd worry that the turbine side is to large. I ran a slightly larger turbine housing and saw 19 psi by 3100 rpm on a highly modded 3.1 w/manual tranny. I really doubt it will spool all that well on a standard 3.1.

Niice upgrade. What kind of "light" mods do you happen to have? What times do you seek of running?

Looks great Josh. When I saw it in person I thought it looked like a pretty crazy setup... The Supra guys use these exact same turbos to get 700 whp. I wonder what it would do on a 3.1?

That's a "big" turbo! I thought you were planning on upgrading to something a bit smaller...

very light mods - only real mods over a stock TGP is the 5-speed swap, no cat, custom dyno-tuned EEPROM, and Magnecor KV85 wires. otherwise just a few little things like EGR delete, TurboXS RFL BOV, deleted all underhood AC etc. i'm talking about a ~240,000 mile 3.1 MPFI LH0 short block that has never been rebuilt, no porting at all, stock TGP intercooler, stock TGP exhaust manifolds, etc. of course, i'm building a custom crossover for the T4 flange and external wastegate and a V-band DP will be needed to be fabbed up but the rest of the exhaust is still stock besides there being no cat.

i've never ran it at the track but it dyno'd 227whp & 325wtq last year at the same shop on the same day that Tim dyno'd his Monte Carlo at. i just dyno'd at another dyno after the chip tuning and gained another ~28whp & 30wtq so it's around 255whp & 360wtq as is.

No, the stock Mahle pistons are cast aluminum w/ a reinforcing steel ring.

Hmm... Well I guess the joke is up. That was actually my turbo. Josh and Dan dropped by my house for a drive and we wound up putting my turbo next to his as a joke. I figured that due to it's size, we would get a lot of comments. Josh was a good sport for it and was up for posting the pics.

It's the largest turbo available in a T04E housing and is still VERY large even for it's normal T04S or T04H compressor housing. It's equivalent to a GT40R. It will make as much power and spool as quickly, but is a drop in and requires no reworking of my current setup. The GT40R would require a new crossover, WG setup, intake pipe, and intercooler piping. The GT35R is the largest GT series drop in I could run, but is too small. I do not think I could even run an air filter with a 4" intake turbo. This is the same turbo that the Toyota Supra guys consider to be the ultimate street turbo for 500 whp on pump gas, which is actually my goal.

haha. seriously, the biggest turbo i'll go with on my 3.1 Turbo Cutlass would probably be the GT2871R. i'll think about a T3 flanged turbo if/when i go with a 3400. i tend to prefer smaller turbos though, i hate lag. maybe a T3/T04E with .63 A/R stage III wheel and a 50-trim compressor. hell i don't know...i haven't even looked into upgrading the turbo yet.

i really thought more people were going to call me crazy for thinking i was actually going to do it

People believed you because people do and will run turbo's way bigger than they need to. I have a friend who did a turbo setup. At 1000 rpm, the compressor made maybe 1-2 rpm. That's it. It was way to large for the application, lagged like crazy.

The usually comments from people who go to big are "I want max peak HP" or "Turbo lag is good on FWD". People are so willing to gain that extra 5-15 wheel hp up top at the cost of 1000-2000 rpm of powerband, it's crazy.

yeah, i was especially surprised when i mentioned my engine had so many miles not to mention i don't even have the supporing mods to run a turbo like that in the first place. i really expected a response after that heh.

i would actually like more lag than what i have now (practically nothing of course) because it would probably help me get some traction. my peak torque (probably around ~360wtq) was down @ 3200 RPM. it was starting to lose traction in 3rd gear on dry clean pavement @ 14-15psi so i lowered the boost down to 11-12psi. oh well i won't be buying a turbo anytime soon unfortunately.

i had an '89 Lebaron GTS with a 2.2L 4-cylinder and the factory Garrett T3...ugh now that had lag. it sure sucked you back in the seat when it spooled though.
