  • Engine noise

I have an 01 3400 Grand Am, RSM setup 8 psi, forged pistons ,the works,
I was going 140 mph, and when I stoped.... Im hearing a slight knocking noise from the engine. What could it being comeing from???? Could it be the lifters, valves a rod bearing. Has anyone had this problem with thier 01 Grand am.

A valve spring hung up on a piston? Last time I checked, the valve spring is an inch or 2 from the piston. If you hung a valve spring on a piston, you have some serious issues...

Remember that RSM SC setup issue we told you about awhile ago? Wouldn't be suprised if the SC shaft is about to go on you.

Oh, and 140? I know a GA only pushing 8 psi isn't capable of 140 in the quarter. Maybe you should change your sig to: "If I die being a moron, I'll still be dead."

First question is, what have you done in the line of tuning.

Are you still running the RSM "tune"? Have you reinstalled the MAF sensor?

It could also be the bearing starting to go.

Actually i was going 140 on the freeway, and no Im not runing the RSM tune anymore, It was tuned with DHP by a local Dyno shop. My mechanic told me that one of my rockers on the rear part of the engine is making the noise, he thinks, or it just need to be adjusted. I think thats what he said. Its not really a loud knocking, more of a tapping noise, it gets faster the higher I rev. It sounds in sequence with the motors rev.

Oh and I dont believe a MAF will help as much as its theriozed to help. So Im leaving it out, i will let someone else try that theory out.

Back on subject, none of you guys have had this problem.

Do you personally own the DHP tuner?

If so I would like to see some of your scans of this so called tune.

Again, no one can force you to put the MAF, but when you look at every other turbo/supercharger out there aside from RSM they are running the MAF. That alone should tell you something along with the full line pressure shifts, which the MAF helps to regulate.

ooohhh it's not a theory. But we'll let you figure that out when the engine won't turn no more. I'm afraid to ask, but are you still using the stock MAP sensor?

^2nd that. If you continue to run without the maf you are an idiot. We've tried to help you, but if you won't listen to us... oh,well. It's your engine, and you wonder why you're having problems now. If you are hearing a ticking noise that increases with engine speed, it's quite possibly a bad lifter, but I wouldn't rule out other problems.

Yep, it was a bad lifter, Fixed it already. i also installed a cutoff valve right before the cat, ill put pics up later, it sounds awsome and runs great. I wouldnt be surprised if I was running high 13's. But even with a tune my tranny still shift to soon durring normal driving. I am putting my MAF back in. Thats really the only thing left I have to do.

Even with a tune? Isnt that an electronic trans? Why not change the shift points when you do a tune? Just my .02 though I guess.

It is an electronically controlled trans, but rsm removes the MAF sensor on their SC kit and that puts the car into speed density mode. It wasn't designed to run like that and only runs in SD so that if there is a MAF failure you can get the car home/to a shop and get it fixed. It basically switches to safety mode, and several of the shifting tables for the trans reference the MAF sensor, so with no MAF sensor the shift points and pressure get all screwed up. Thats why we keep saying you should never be running without the MAF.
